My Maxima lifespan

My Maxima is a '98 SE that I bought from a friend of mine about two years ago when the car had 99,000 miles on it. I have since then put an additional 40,000 miles on it. Nearly all of the miles on my car are from highway commuting. The car has never had any problems and I change the oil and do minor maintainence regularly. I do live in Boston however, where the heavy salting of the roads in the winter can do some damage.

What I want to know is...
How many miles can I realistically expect to put on this car?
How long might she last?

I'm interested to know what other people have gotten out of theirs.

Thanks

Very simply put...if the car's been well maintained, and if you don't beat on it too hard too often [we all like to have our fun], and if you do mostly highway miles...I wouldn't be surprised to see another 100,000 miles on her. My '96 has 166,000 miles on it, and repairs have been minimal...I trust my car to go well beyond the 200k mark.

Best of luck!

I too have a '98SE and live in Mass as well. I've had my car for 2 years (this month!). As long as you do the maintenance and keep the car nice, you should see 250k no problem. I'm at 107k right now, bought my car with just 63k 2 years ago. Right now, I will be needing a new clutch, new front brakes, and a few other odds and ends, otherwise my car is working perfectly!

Well, the rust underneath kinda annoys me, but thats Mass winters for ya

What can someone do about underbody rust? I live in Boston too. During the winter (salting/sanding season) I was the outside of the car and under-carriage at least twice a month, if not weekly. Are there any types of spray coatings that body shops can do to stop/prevent more rust?

how long are auto trans supposed to last because my 95 se trans blew up (literally) at 106k and one of my moms friend had the exact same problem at 105k. Now my mom was the one driving it back then and the trans blew up like a few weeks after she had it flushed, i'm pretty sure that had something to do with it. thx

flushing high milage trannies is BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD!!!
changing the tranny fluid and flushing are very different...

Flushing can damage the seals and "varnish" (I think that's what my friend told me) which can cause tranny failure...

This is auto exclusively...I don't know about manuals

realistically........ the engine will never go, if your not boosted. these engines are tanks. but the paint and other misc. things will start to go, but you can expect to hit over 200k without any real problems as long as you take car of it. there are many 3rd gens in the 200k + range. many people have gone to 250k and the only big replacement needed was a new tranny around 160k miles or so
