Clutch or Transmission problem?

Notable problem with either my Clutch or Transmission, I have a '96 5 Speed. The thing is, I don't think it is the transmission, at least I hope not.

Anyways, what's happening is that when my clutch is engaged with any gear, it's a lot more jerky, like it doesn't respond when i tap my gas (Like say, my CRX.).

As an example, say I'm in 5th gear and cruisin at 2,000 RPM, I hit the gas and it seems like something spins then the clutch catches then goes, but with a jolt (like BAM!).

This seems more to be the clutch than the transmission, but any feedback would be appreciated.

Also, it is sometimes impossible to shift into 3rd gear, sometimes 2nd. (mainly during downshift, rarely from upshift.)

Thanks!

I would go with clutch slippage.

Out of curiousity.. Do you know what are some symptoms of transmission failure from actual driving and not by a visible failure such as oil leak?

Possibly noise, grinding gears, jerkiness, etc. ?

Thanks.

If there is a whining type noise, it could be the differential bearings which will require a transmission rebuild in the near future.

Yeah, I've heard that. But not much other notable signs of transmission failure?

I'd rather have my clutch go than my transmission for the moment. At the moment, it's just annoying driving this 5 speed Max like this. Thanks for the Info though man, appreciate it.

My opinion would be the clutch.
However the clutch would slip in all gears not just 5th.

Yes, it would be in all gears where I do feel the slippage while engaged. Thanks for the info.

its definitely your clutch. I had the same problem. First i would notice it in higer gears. It would rev up and then drop down to engage the clutch. I had to replace everything.

Have your car going up a hill and at low rpms in 5th. Then floor it. If it slips than its the clutch. Otherwise it could still be the clutch and it hasnt gotten to this stage yet but i bet it will slip.

ok well tell us what kind of clutch and how many miles do you have on it?

As for common tranny failures... it usually ends up leaking transmission oils and a whining sound steadily spreading from first to fifth gear.

By doing this, you mean that if it slips, it'll be like a throbbing type of slippage? Like, I feel this on say even 3rd gear going up a hill at very low rpms, it feels like it's hesistating. Now, the hesistation doesn't seem like it's the engine. So that's why I'm trying to determine (earlier the better anyways) whether it's my clutch or my transmission causing this.

But anyways, OK. Sounds good. The last time I had a clutch go on me was with a Honda, and when it was going .. It felt like total crap. Right now, my Max still drives OK but it just doesn't feel like it's responding properly is all. Thanks man.

Most likely stock clutch. Not sure how many KM on it, but the car is at 153,000KM (95,600MILES). So I'm doubtful that it has been replaced before since it's so not feeling right.

Ever since I bought this (March 11/2003) I've been looking for tranny leakage but it looks alright. It's greasy down there but no actual drop's of oil after a full evening in the parking.
