Tire Size

Will tire size 225/45/17 or 245/45/17 be okay for OEM wheels?

When I was looking for new tires it seemed to me that the 245/45x17 was the closest match to the oem re92 dimensions. Roll out near =, width was + 1/2" but that would seem to be only 1/4 more per side.

Are you saying that you're running 245/45/17 tires with OEM wheels on your 5th gen Maxima right now?

245 is too wide for a 7" rim. The widest you can go with a 45 aspect tire is 225. 225/45/17s will have a slightly smaller diameter that OEM, but you'll be faster off the line! Search for the "miata tire calculator" and you'll find out what it will do to your speedo.

I sold the car but, DIscount Tire mounted two for me and I checked it out front and rear. The salesman was against it. I didn't drive it but when it was on the ground everything cleared. With the OEM 92s on it I could slide my index finger between the tire and the ? I don't remember whatever it is that is in close proximity to the tire at the top. With the 245/45x17 I could only get my pinkie finger past. I got ham hands so it didn't bother me. They only had two in stock or I would have driven out with them. I wanted instant gratification. If you look at some of the tire size calculators on the www the 245/45 is so close to the same dimensions it's hard to beleive. If their is a Discount Tire store in your area they are usually willing to let you try some on if you want to see for yourself.

These are a couple of calculators. The second link is a google cached version. The link to the original page doesn't work any more but the cached version still does. Someone on the org may know of better ones if so I'm sure we'll hear about it.

Yeah, I agree that 245 is too wide for a 7" rim, but it's only 1/2 inch wider. Also, the 225 version is 3.4% faster than the OEM tires, while the 245 is only 0.7% faster. 245 is way off in terms of width but the 225 is way off in terms of speedometer accuracy. So, which one should I pick?
