Engine startup - oil pressure - knocking

Sometimes when i start the car cold or hot the oil light will come on for a split second then off and on again. Sometimes i can hear a knock (no oil sound) but it's only 2-3 knocks. Is this normal ?

I have a 96 gle with 120km (75 miles).
I'm running a nissan filter with quakerstate 5-50 synthetic

It had a nonnissan oil filter when i bought it.

It did it before with non nissan filter and with nissan filter.

any suggestions ?

oil pump ?

Thanks , martin

No matter what it is, knocking is not good. Figure out what it is before you drive it. You don't want to spin a bearing and have to drop a new engine in it.

My oil light flickers too. I'm using 10w-40 Castrol GTX right now. I think I'm gonna get Mobil1 15w-50 next time.

Oh yeah, I'm consuming oil. I put in a quart every 3rd gas tank. Yes, I drive my car hard.

That's not cool...get it fixed and take it easy. Granted I drive hard, but that's alot different than beating the ever-loving s*** out of your max. and not to sound like a parent, but she'll treat you as good as you treat her.

Well if your pcv valve isn't functioning right, you will have bad oil consumption. I guess it could be attributed to knocking if you didn't add oil over long periods of time.

What's the best type of Mobilone oil for my 1996 Maxima? 5w-40, 10w-40, etc. My engine had 111,500 miles.

DO NOT USE ANYTHING BUT 5W-30... please.... i can understand if your engine is burning a lot of oil. but fix the problem don't just add thicker oil. ignoring the problem gets you into big trouble down the road. there are areas in the vq engine that need the lower weight 5w. thicker oil will not allow these gallaries to be lubricated properly. keep cool, later
