Front brake caliper almost takes my finger off

I had just finished washing my car last night and I decided to do my monthly cleaning of the inside of my wheels. I do this with some detailing spray and a towel, by inserting my hand in between each wheel spoke and wiping.

As I went to clean my front wheel, I slid my hand in and was instantly sliced on the top of my index finger knuckle by a metal prong on the front caliper. Blood was literally spurting out like a geyser and the laceration was over an inch long and extremely deep.

I got to the emergency room at 5:15. After waiting for over 3 hours, I finally left the ER at 9:30 with 4 stitches across my knuckle and a splint that I have to wear for a week.

The culprit- the metal prong that is sticking out there. That thing is razor sharp! The 2002 is definitely sharper than my 2000 Max calipers were.

The result.

You got all the luck dude. You couldn't force me to work on a car if I had your luck.

No kidding!!

Andy...dude, looks like two options are becoming painfully (pardon the pun) evident. You need to:

1. Just drive a car that is stock and not surgically clean.

or

2. Make VERY good friends with a mechanic and with a detail shop so you don't have to get involved.

It would be for your own good.

Actually, I know what he's talking about. I have sliced mine (not to that degree) on that prong but now, I adjust the mitt so I don't come in contact with that prong.

Same thing happened to me, although it wasn't as bad...the bleeding stopped after I finished was my car....hurts like a bitc4....

So far my Max has hurt me two times:

(1) brake caliper
(2)oil cap was on REALLY tight; went to turn with other hand, and somehow my thumg ended up purple!

Maybe the third time will be a charm!

I knew you always wanted your calipers RED, but don't you think that's an unorthodox way of doing it?? Get well soon.

I think I am actually going to send a letter in to Nissan Consumer Affairs. They probably won't do anything, but there is no reason why that piece should be that sharp. I could slice a piece of paper on it.

Andy.....I did the same EXACT thing. I had painted the calipers like 2weeks prior, then decided to wash the max. Put my hand inside the rim and started "washing around".

I felt nothing.....the next thing I knew there was blood all over my sponge, and car. I was like WTF???

Then I looked at my finger, and BINGO....there she was....a nice little gash.

I went inside and put trip.antibotic on it, wrapped it up and finshed washing.

I was drunk though.

I still have the scar......maby I needed stiches too???

One after another, good thing the hospital is like 2miles away from your house Atleast your alrigt, whats making me wonder is why you got stitched you up? Either that or I should be wondering why I didnt go get stitches when I got sliced to the bone last year
Hell that scare is still on my finger, Atleast your alright. The weird thing is once you get cut bad, you dont feel nothing, with mine I threw a big peice of door frame and felt a tug as soon as I let go. I was like great this is gonna suck, I look at my hand and yep she's a sprayin

If you ever cut yourself to the bone again you might want to get to the hospital. Andy, thats sucks. You find more ways to hurt yourself with your car than I ever thought possible.

Same thing happned to me. Blood was running all over the place and down my driveway. I think i was using a cloth instead of a mitt so my finger was exposed. It didn't hurt that much (due to the deep cut) but the blood forced me to go inside for a bandaid before I continued.

I can imagine this happens often to brake mechanics who are not familiar with the Maxima "razor brakes".

Here is a pic. It is actually a bit longer on the side than the picture depicts, but I only got stitches where it was deep.
