Should I buy a 97 SE max?

I have a 91 GXE right now, but have been planning on getting something faster. I've liked the 97 with a body kit, I think they look awesome. But, I was reading about the lancer evolution (which looks kinda small, but looks pretty cool), and it has a little less horsepower than the 350z, but almost identical torque!!! I'm looking for something 4 doors, and power(not to metion japanese, becuase they tend to last longer).
Is the 97 SE max 5spd the best to do? I'll budget about $10,000 for the car (easy to get any 97 for $7000 or under), so that leaves me 3k for mods.. don't think I can be as fast as the z or evo? Or close?
Which cars to look at??

if ur trying to be as fast as the evo or z, u won't do it with 10k, unless u get a max for 4 - 5 k and supercharge it with the remaining funds

How much does the super charger cost; how much torque/horse power will it gain, and 3rd, would it then be able to be up there?

you can do it, if you want to be that fast, but if you want to be that fast on your budget, you arent going to be able to do that with a max, especially a max thatll last long enough to be worth the mods. Now this is just my opinion so nobody go and bash it, but if its quarter mile speed 0n a low budget, i think id tell you go with an old f-body GTA or old 5.0, supercharge and nitrous or both. If ur looking for the best sport sedan all around that you can buy for 10g, get the max. so its all a matter of whats important to you.
and by the way, it took ***** to mention domestics in a positive light, so please, dont hate.

I totally agree, if you want a daily driver with a lot of HP, you cannot cheap out on the important stuff, especially tuning. To do it right, a supercharger with everything you _should_ get, will cost around 5k or more. I guess you could do it, would be a lot better if you are mechanically inclined though, labor charges cost quite a bit. You won't be able to get an Evo VIII for less than 35,000, if you have 10k to spend, eh... start saving. If you really want a fast car, a used LS1 camaro or Trans Am are the best bang for the buck, they can both hold a ton of nitrous. Just FYI, its not all about hp/tq numbers, there are tons of other factors involved. FWD is not a good thing for the 1/4 mile.
