My friend is getting a new clutch installed, and he has an Aluminum flywheel, does the flywheel have to be resurfaced??? Or what is actually done when they resurface and what is it for???
Thanks in advance.
(thinking about doing the clutch job with him and a friends dad)

When I got my new clutch, the supplier recommended I have my flywheel resurfaced. I also got a new pilot bushing and a new throw-out bearing.

The clutch and the flywheel form a wear pattern with use. Each of these surfaces wears on the other. If you replace the clutch without dressing the flywheel, the wear pattern on the old flywheel will cause your new clutch to wear out prematurely. Ideally, both new clutch and dressed flywheel start at square one together, both with smooth surfaces. If you can't dress the flywheel, then flywheel replacement is recommended to complement your new clutch.

I've never seen a flywheel being dressed, but I suppose they grind them in a special lathe, somewhat like the machine they use to dress brake rotors. When they're done, the flywheel should look --pretty much-- as good as new. And it will be a *little* lighter than before...
