GXE... ticking noise. for a couple miles and every time I start it up

I just purchased this car last week and it started the day after I got it. Everytime I start it up, it ticks really fast and loud. No matter how warm the motor is, it will do it for a couple miles and then disappear. Does not matter if it sits for 10 min or 10 hours, it ticks and then disappears after a little bit.

Thanks

OR ORRRR!!! just maybe... it could be your exhaust studs; 3 in the front, 3 in the ***** friggin back.
I getting ticks too. I've downsized it to either the lifters, because it's had that slight noise from the get go when I rev the engine from the engine bay... or it's them darn studs, which I have read, are pretty difficult and frustrating to change.
But that's the whole deal with Maximas right? The build on a cheap dream.

Like subs said... get a good oil change... and use a genuine Nissan filter for best results...

Broken exhaust studs are common with VG engines. My old car ('91 GXE) had it and like 2-3 had snapped by time I got rid of it...just didn't bother putting money into a car I knew I was going to get rid of. One way of checking is to look at where your exhaust manifold joins to the head and seeing/feeling (*Disclaimer* only when the engine is cold!) if there are any missing...they tend to work themselves out after a time and I'd bet you'll discover you have at least one missing. There should be 2 bolts per exhaust port...12 total.

well thanks for the replies. I am changing the oil tomarrow and will check if the noises changes. If so, I will assume its the lifters.
I DO have a exhuast leak but haven't had time to look to see where it is coming from. THe leak sounds like its come from around the cat. Then again, maybe it is the exhuast studs.

Thanks

lifter gasket leak

might be burning engine oil.

see the exhaust with engine running, if a blue-dark smoke comes out, you're officially burning engine oil.

Try to put more engine oil and start up the engine.
if that gets ticking noise away, your gasket is leaking. But don't worry, the car will run.

Just carry extra quart of engine oil.

Makes sense because everytime I change my oil (3000-3500mile intervals w/ OEM filter) I notice that I am only getting about 3 quarts and a little more out everytime....
Check that engine oil folks!!!
