Rear Caliper Help

So I got around to installing my Dimpled/Slotted Brembo's today just to confirm that the groning sound I've been having for the past month is due to a seized rear caliper. I end up getting the piston out but found it very difficult to near impossible to get it back into the boot, trying to "screw" it back in was even harder so I gave up for the night. I was wondering if rebuilding the caliper myself will be difficult and how much would it cost. Any input will be great since I'm short on time and my max is sitting on some jackstands as I type.

you can buy a re-manunfactured caliper at a local auto parts store. it should be cheap since you have to swap your old part with them. the reman caliper also has the nissan logo on it....at least it did for mine when i got it from pepboys. i got mine (front caliper) for about $80...not sure how much it would be for the rear. you just have to swap the caliper and that's it.
if you really want to save $$$, you can put the piston back by bleeding your whole brake system and try to push the piston back in that way. actually either you get the reman or rebuild it yourself, you have to bleed the system. but when you rebuild it, you gotta make sure you don't have a scratched piston or you might have a leak.

hope this helps.

Thanks it did help, but being the foolish stuborn guy I am I tried pushing the piston back while my hands were soaked in brake fluid and yup it fell not once but twice. I guess I'll get a remanufactured one.

The rear calipers have to be screwed back in. Try using a set of needle nose pliers, put the tips in the grooves of the caliper, and turn in clockwise. Hope that helps

If you can get your hands on a piston turning tool, that'd be the easiest way. see bottom post

If you go to motorvate.ca's brake reconditioning page I think the same approach may work on your rear caliper.

Thanks, I got the caliper turning tool today along with a reman Left Rear caliper. Total cost about 120 with core trade in. So my rears are set just stuck on some rusted front rotors. Any advice on how to get them off? They don't have the "screw" hole like the rear ones.

Just so that I understand you correctly, your front rotors are stuck/seized to your wheel bearings right (sorry if I got the term wrong)? If that's the case AND you have no intention on keeping your rotors, try taking a 2x4 to it to smack it off. I know, it doesn't sound as elegant as using a bolt to "push" off the rotors. Just be warned that rotors can become seized on pretty darn tightly! Good luck.

That sucks. Rotors can become seized on pretty darn tightly! If you have no intention on keeping your old rotors, take a 2x4 or big hammer to it try to smack it off. I know, it doesn't sound as elegant as using a bolt to "push" off the rotors. Before you put on your new rotors, shlop on anti-seize on the inside of the wheel hub so you don't encounter this problem again. Good luck.

Dk if you know this or not but there is a TSB out there on groaning rear brakes. The fix involves a shim kit... check out www.nhtsa.gov I think.

Yeah the front rotors rusted onto the hub and I can't budge them. Thought about just taking something blunt and going at it but wouldn't that mess up my alignment? Rust SUCKS!
