Found out my outer cv boots are bad and need replacing ASAP. Any cheaper places to purchase these?

And How much should I expect to pay at the dealership to fix the outer cv boots?

I was quoted 228 dollars for parts and labor. Im not sure how long it takes to replace these. My front 2 are bad. All I know is the dealership charges 55 dollars and hour for work and the quote was for 228 dollars.

I might can cut this price down to size if i can findout how long it takes to replace these and where to get a good price.

Here is a more direct question. How long should it take to replace the outer cv boots on a 1997 Nissan Maxima? I have been researching prices for the part. Came across http://www.overnightautoparts.com/
their price is 32 dollars and some change for 2 outer cv boots. Could there be any problems from using these?

 

I would simply buy remanufactured axles ($60 ea from AutoZone: non-ABS and non-LSD) and replace both axles.

You have to take the axles out and disassemble them to replace the boots anyway.

Why take a chance that the cv-joints haven't already been damaged by lack of grease or they may be ready to fail anyway. Who knows?

I replaced both of my axles in probably 2 hours. Not that difficult if you can or have worked on cars before.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Well can you buy new axles or aftermarket ? What are some thoughts on that ? So if I buy new or refurbished axles. I also get completely new cv joints and boots ? As opposed to just buying new cv boots. Is that right?

www.Raxles.com the only place that uses new inner and outter CV joints. Everyone else uses rebuilt ones. I have one sitting in my room and I have to get it swapped in tomorrow. $119 shipped for passengers side, $134 shipped for drivers. Labor is $73/side locally.

I responded to your PM, let me know if ya need any more info. By the way, here's a little explaination for ya (if you didn't know, if you do then forget this):
An axle delivers power to your wheels. A CV joint (short for a Continuous Velocity joint) is part of your axle. You actually have two, and inner and outer. They keep your axle spinning (and it turn your wheels getting power) as the car goes up and down and right and left on roadways. Bad CVs as you could guess, can lead to LOTS of problems from vibration to poor performace!

You can always buy new (OEM) but they run about $500 each. Rebuilt ones from auto parts, like AutoZone, are remanufactured OEM axles - you have to return your old axles (cores) for return to the manufactuer so they can be rebuilt and resold. They all come with new cv boots on both joints.

raxles.com, as vyrus said, uses new joints. Others rebuild them.

Depends on how much you want to spend. I've used the cheaper rebuilt ones with no issues on both of my Maximas.

how long would you think it takes to install the drivers and passengers axles?

 

Hour a piece. Take off wheel. Remove 37mm center bolt. Pull hub assembley off. Remove 3 end bolts. Pull out axle, put in new one.
