The old Cold Air Intake post.. help me out d00ds

Alright I'm new to this board and I know you guys have probably seen this thread a thousand times posted by other people, but now I need to know. I have a 1996 Maxima SE with standard transmission. What is available to my car for cold air intakes? This kid told me last night that only weapon-r makes one, but i'm pretty sure stillen also makes one for maxima's, but its REALLY expensive ($350+)The weapon-r intake however is $170, and I know a place that will put it in for $20, which is pretty good. Could you guys let me know what is available to the 4th gen maximas for intakes, and what would give me the greatest amount of horses for the money. I would like to spend under $250 not including labor. Thanks.

Although I'm not one to talk, cuz I had help, but this can be done by yourself, or with someone that knows what they're doing

just do a search ...keywords to look for Place Racing, Injen, Frankencar, Cold Air Intake, and obviously "intake" Simple to put on, definately do it yourself. I have a Frankencar and absolutely love it...check it out at Frankencar.com

thanks guys I'm about to take a look at the frankencar intake, but I just finished looking at the weapon-r dragon intake, and its looking pretty good with a price of $170, and around 8 horsepower. Still I'd like to know what else is available, and could you also tell me what kind of extra noise would be produced?

is there a difference in horsepower between the cold air and the regular intake?

Cold air is drawn from your fender well, basically makes your fender well into an "airbox" and is better for your engine, probably gaining around 10-12 horsepower. The HAI (Hot Air Intake - Frankencar, Stillen, etc.) draws the air from behind your battery, which will be a bit hotter, but its still a nice performance boost mid to high end. Thus cheaper and easier to do.

Dude, I noticed your from Boston. Frankencar is having a meet in July 13th at their business, Steve (Frankencar's owner) will be there installing intakes. You can pick one up and have him install it if you want (or you can DIY and have him watch over you ).

I also forgot to add: Injen's CAI is a rather unique intake system, where it draws the air from right behind the radiator. I'm not sure of its power gains, I'm sure probably a bit better than a HAI, thus you don't have to do any excessive drilling or anything.

Remember, the choice is yours

wow thank you! Its in Bondsville, MA... I've never even heard of that place, but when I looked on mapquest it said it would take about 1 hour and 45 minutes (90 miles) to get there from where I am. I'll probably go with the cold air since it is better for the engine.

There's the option of the ebay intakes. Search "maxima intake" and you'll see. Most people report that in the end, it's pretty much the same overall gains. Its said you lose top end power with a CAI, since the air you draw goes through a lot of twisting and its kind of restrictive at the higher RPMs, while with something like a Frankencar its overall gains throughout the whole way and better top end. There's also homemade intakes you can construct for about 30 bux ? Do some research, search "intake" and read through the threads and decide.

I installed my PR CAI myself and i didnt knwo anything about cars. it said it woudl take me only 2 hours but it ended up taking me 8 because i had to clip away the 3 inch hole with sheet metal scissors instead of cutting it with a power saw or drill. Man that sucked.
