? about rims and ? about top speed

My car vibrates at about 75mph, I recently had my tires rotated and balanced, then at about 80 - 85 mph it seems to stop. Has anyone had this same problem? Saturday I was heading from San Antonio to my hometown of Lafayette, La. In between San Antonio and Houston I really opened the ride up, when I hit 120 my ride wouldnt go any faster. I was at about 5000 rpm and it seem like my ride went into neutral. I have a manual tranny. Does anybody know what this is. My homeboy said I need to get a tranny intercooler and another said I need to get a chip. Thanks for any help

i agree with the speed limiter idea.. and if you plus sized your your tires your tach will read about 4-5 miles less than what you are really going at 125..

Do GLE's have speed limiters? How much added weight were you carrying (as in going on leave with a month's worth of stuff compared to a weekend)? Tire size plays a big role, too.

Eh, you dont have a 5spd GLE unless you swapped the transmission.. I think you are just a little confused about which trim is which. GLE = fully loaded, automatic transmission only. Base model GXEs are usually governed at 120 or so.

Uhm....no.

First of all the tach does not read anything to do with miles, it reads in engine RPM's. The speedomoeter reads your speed. Second, most people who plus size are talking about WIDTH not HEIGHT. Most people choose a wider tire/rim combo that maintains the same height for exactly the reason you mention...to preserve speedometer and odometer accuracy.

Essentially The Bigger your rim the higher your top speed will be, But the bigger it is the longer it takes to get the top speed

Your top speed will be the same because the engine's power has not changed. Look at auto vs manual maximas. The autos are geared to reach 170 mph in top gear, but they never will. The 5 speed has shorter gearing, so it will reach top speed sooner, and be able to sustain it better. Because the auto and manual maximas have the same engine and therefore power, their top speeds are similar.

Well thanks for the info. I was wondering about the trim gle gxe thing. The guy I bought it from stated it was a gle my old mechanic had it down as a gxe. Can I get a chip or remove something so I can go a little faster. I am about to do some engin work. I have 18's on there so I can see the diff between the speedometer and how fast I am actually going.

Easy way to find out (assuming the car is stock)

Fog lights = SE
Leather = GLE
Neither = GXE

a JWT will get rid of the speed limiter and also raise the rev to 7k or more if you tell them to.

Look at the 4th gen FAQs. Removing the speed limitier is a very coomon mod. You can go the JWT route, but that's very expensive if the limiter is really all you want to remove.
