Brake judder solution

Hello All,

I just wanted to share some useful information about the brake judder issue to help others who have this problem.

Short Story:
The brake judder was resolved by removing all the rust which builds up on the rotors, wheel plate(that hold the lug nuts) and even the wheel lug nut surface. Make sure the surface that connects the 2-3 items are free from rust and anything else.

Long Story:
I received the judder when I bought the car with OE rotors. I replaced the front rotors and new performance friction pads from Autozone. I then took it for a test drive right after the installation with the new rotors, no judder for a month but it came back. Fustrated at spending all this money and not getting the issue resolved, there must be something else. Could I have tightened the wheel nuts on too tight? This is a possibility since I did not use a torque wrench the last time. Jacked up the car, loosen and retighten the nuts to specification with torque wrench but still this did not solve the judder issue. I then talked to an Autozone guy about the issue and he said that it is probably not the rotors since you replaced them. It's probably rust build up on the rotors and rust built up on the plate that connects to the rotors. A light bulb came on, this made a lot of sense. I then rushed to have the OE rotors resurfaced just to make sure. After the rotors were done, I asked the guy who resurfaced the OE rotors if they were warped, he said no. "No, your rotors were not warped." Went home, took my front brakes apart, removed a lot of rust from the rotor and the plate connecting the rotors(which hold the bolts) using sandpaper and a dremmel tool to get around the wheel studs. Put everything back, torqued the lug nuts to specification, and voila. No brake judder and smooth braking. Don't look to replace the rotors until you make sure the surface that connects the two items the rotors and wheel plate) are free from rust and anything else.

I hope this helps anyone with this issue and save them some money.

Thanks to all who have posted in the past since I know this site has helped me a great deal on doing things myself instead of getting ripped off at the dealership.

I wish I had seen this before I bought new rotors from stillen.

Still in the breakin phase so I haven't tried a high speed stop so I don't know if the judder is gone for good.

Did you check your runout on the wheel, and what were the readings? I checked mine. Left was fine, but the right was way out, about .008 inches.

New rotors were much better, but the right was still a little high, about .003 inches, and would change if I rotated the rotor.

With the new rotors, I get a Whinning sound, particularly when almost stopped. I assumed this was from the cross drilled holes. Where your performance rotors drilled?

I did not check my rotors or runout on the wheell before and after I had the rotors turned. Keep in mind that I only turned my front rotors and these are most likely the culprit to the judder. I got my slot rotors from one of the recent group buys on this site. I am not sure what the name was but I think it was performance but you can look it up using the search option. I drove down to DC from Boston and the brakes worked great on highway stops. I do however need an alignment. Anyone know of a good cheap place in Boston for an alignment?

Hope this helps people.
