Anybody have a guesstimate on the tread life for RE730 or SP5000 tires? Owners' suggestions welcome as are others that know someone that has these. Driving style (aggressive, mild) for that mileage would be greatly appreciated, too.

Thanks!

FYI I just burned through a set of Dunlop SP8000s in 17K miles and would like to get a lot more out of my next set. I'm willing to compromise a little in handling for another 10-15K miles in tread life.

Well Kev, how you been man?

The sp8000 only have a utog of 200
The sp5000 have a utog of 340

The Re730 have a utog of 300.

UTOG ratings are not totally accurate but it would seem any one of these tire should last more than the sp8000s did. You probably know this but the http://www.tirerack.com does have pretty good info. I bought a set of KUMHO Estca Supra 712s based on their site info and owner surveys. Also did a search on http://www.twinturbo.net to get some other owner opinions.

FYI. The Firestone Sz50ep have a 340 utog and I had these tires ala Russ. A good tire in dry and wet. Stiff tire too. Abeit a heavier tire than normal IMHO. I went though them quick becuase of my crappy alignment.

Keven,

I've been running on a set of SP5000s for about 9 months now. During those 9 months, I've accumlated over 25,000 miles. No that's not a type-o. Take away the negative camber wear, I've got about 2 to 3 mm left before the wear bar. How long that lasts I donno, but I would say there's atleast 3-5k more on those tires, if not more.

I would recommend them strongly. They are very comfortable and very quiet. And I think if you can get 30k on a all season high performance, it's not that bad of a deal.

Shing: Yeah, 30K is about what I was hoping for...any more and the tire's just too hard to be worth a damn performance-wise. That's about what I got on the Pirellis, but I'm hoping for a better performer than those. You got something like 20K out of your RE71's, right? Could I assume that with 300 TW RE730's I might be able to get 50% more life?...Probably not, though. How do the SP5000s compare to the RE71's? Not quite as good performer but close? Nowhere near as good? I don't mind taking a small step down in performance on these new tires, but not a huge step, ya know?

Jeff: Yep, I've been away from the forum for awhile. I was on vacation in Australia for 3 weeks (have to brag!-lotta fun!), didn't have much time to spend here before I left and after I came back, haven't had much interest to be honest. I like the SZ50's, too...lots of good comments at TireRack, seems to be the best all-around tire, but they ARE heavy, on avg 5 lbs more than a comparable tire, and they're ~$50 more per tire than I intend to pay.

I just got a set of SP5KS in 225/50-16 on the RX7 rims. I second what Shing says They are quite and comfortable! They dont stick as well as my Yokohama AVSi but "its not that bad of a deal".

Whats been up Keven?

I have around 15k miles on my SP5000's now and they are a bit more than 50% worn. So, I would estimate around 25,000 miles out of these, but I do corner pretty hard so for me, these tires may out faster than for other people.

I've got the RE730's and I'm expecting them to last about 25-30k. My old RS-A's lasted about 25k, crappy performance and wear.

Thanks for all the responses, guys. I'll toss a coin tonight and decide!

Shing, since you do so much driving, maybe you should buy a gas-miser like my girlfriend's Geo Metro. It's a convertible! And has "AM/FM Cassette"! You can always add rims and an exhaust tip.

Well.. hehe... I have thought abuot it.. maybe something like a Honda Insight... but the problem is the time it'd take to "recover" the cost of buying the car would be years. For the time being, I am just driving very slow and careful. I drive the CRX during the week and the Maxima on the weekend for the long trip. I can get about 27mpg on the maxima this way and believe it or not, I get 30mpg in the city on the crx, even after the engine swap... heh. I bet it could see 35mpg on the freeway.

As for the tires, you probably know this, but those wear ratings shouldn't be compared cross company... it's good for the same brand. As SP5000 are good, I might get another set... but in reality, I am looking for some brick tires.... well more or less, I want somethign that will give me 50k miles, that will alst me about 1.5 years.

Probably irrelevant but I like the SP4000 tires (now discontinued) ON my 2nd set and I get nearly 40,000 miles on a set with some moderately spirited driving...
