ok, the DB for stock muffler with nothing modified is what...?? and what is the DB for a flowmaster, magnaflow mufflers and what about the greddy exhaust, all with stock y-pipes and nothing modified, execpt for the greddy...i need professional results please...

 

do you want hard numbers or are you wanting to know how perceptibly loud different setups are?

 

The key is getting a long resonator in the b pipe to keep the muffler quiet.

 

this diagram doesnt really help me, i already went to the flowmaster website and check that out, what if that bar chart is not from a maxima, it could be a different car, and the difference in tone would not be the same as the max, i need results from people who actually tested the db from these mufflers on a 3rd gen maxima, not from some other car

 

well i want how perceptibly loud these different setups are in a stock maxima

 

i would be interested in the SPL (sound pressure level) of the mufflers also. And i want a better performance muffler but i DONT want the sound . I want the car as quiet as it is now. maybe a little louder is ok but only by a very small margin. I hate those cars that sound like blenders on crack.

 

I want an exhaust that is quiet for 90% of my driving and has that lovely growl when you boot it. That's what I'm trying to acheive. No ricey fart can sounds. Just quiet, or growl.....

 

if you want performance out of an exhaust system, a muffler alone will not do much for you. it can look nicer. but an advantage, in your case, of not replacing the y-pipe, which dramatically increases db level (as well as being the main element in any power gains from an exhaust mod), a performance muffler will be quieter anyway. in other words, your concern is not so much the muffler's noise as it would be the y-pipe. and it seems you want to keep the stock one. mind you, i have not gone this route personally, so i can only offer philosophy. but it seems to make some sense.

avoid, too, the huge bore "coffee can" type of muffler. i can tell you from my own experience with the magnaflow, that one produces a deep throaty sound and not the ricey buzzing annoying sound. i have heard a valet guy start up may car from afar and it sounds amazing, like a muscle car. and in tunnels or under bridges the sound is just awesome. like music.

 

Look into the 2k1 (maybe 2k not sure) up mufflers then. They have a valve that opens at wot but other than that its nice and quiet.

Or check out the Greddy if you have the money to spend on exhaust. It sounds real nice.

 

well, different people have their own definition of "loud." if possible, it's best for you to hear it in person.

my setup is basically stock except for my magnaflow. the sound is nice and deep, but drones crusing speeds. but it starts to get quiet around 70 mph or around 2500 rpm on my auto.

like others here said, you'll see most gains with a y-pipe.

 

and more two cents of stuff: just for the record, i have read posts on here throughout the months about tuners putting the 5th gen stocky on and they are happy as a clam. it looks great, has "normal" db level, and like awsm66 stated, has a valve that opens at wot for greater flow, whilst preserving backpressure for lower rpms. that technology, btw, comes from the Skyline. in fact, you may be able to hunt down a 5th gen muffler if you are persistent and a little patient as some people may be getting rid of those for pure hi-flow types. and it would be economical.

 

Two of the maximas here in town have flowmaster on. One of the guys has full exhaust, and the other just has a b pipe and the muffler. Sounds fine at idle, and WOT, but a little droney for me around 2k rpm.

 

I'd go dynomax or magnaflow (not the street series) for sure and a good resonator. They are straight thru and flow so much better than other pieces of crap. Also you should absolutely get the Y pipe from warpspeed.
