Quick tranny question
Well since I see no original message I'll Hijack this thread and call it my own.
As some of you know I had my tranny rebuilt about a month ago. 3 weeks after it was out of the shop it got stuck in 2nd gear. So it's been in the shop for the past week getting "fixed". I got word today that they got it done, put it in, drove the block and it got stuck in gear again. So for the 4 weeks that I've owned this car the tranny has been in the shop for 3 weeks and a total of 4 fixes(so far). Has anyone ever had or even heard of this much trouble with a rebuilt tranny? I think I bought a piece and am starting to regret gettting a maxima. I love it when it works, but it hardly ever does. *Venting, just venting*

i have the same problem, A while back when i rebuilt my tranny i forgot to put the spring and ball that goes into one of the rods, and when i attemped to put it in rev it gets stuck into 2nd(not all the time 4 out of 10)I went to the dealer to get a new spring and the the spring they gave me was way to long they told me that all the springs in the tranny have the same part #, so I cut it, took the tranny apart manually disengaged it, put the spring in
threw the tranny back in the car, and everything worked well for the first couple of days, and for some odd reason i was driving down the street tried to shift in 3rd and was unable to,tried 4th and was unable to, all i had was 1,2,& 5. When i got home i tried to put in rev. and it got stuck in 2nd. I wasnt boosting so I doubt I blew a gear. I think i might of cut the spring to short, so I got to take the tranny out again. I feel your pain man

I'm sorry that you are having bad luck too dude. I'm begining to think that my mechanic hires illegal immigrants who only know how to work on 30 year old russian cars.
I can't fix it myself, and the shop isnt telling me exactly whats wrong, so I can't give any advice on yours. Sorry, but good luck man.

I'm not sure how big of a chain it is. There's quite a few in the midwest, well Iowa anyway. It's called Tuffy's, but thats just where i took it, they had to take it to some tranny shop 20 mins away. I'll find out the name of it tomorrow hopefully.
do not rebuild tranny anymore. buy new one from nissan. 2300 bucks. you spent that anyway or more with this rebuild nightmare, didn't you? and you can have a new one with a warranty. no bull. in some areas, it is better to not salvage something. it took me years to learn this.
also, avoid Cottman. they suck. personal experience, btw. if you like them, then have at them.

Ok well here's an update on my nightmare, as bonzelite correctly called it
I talked to them today and they said that they FINALLY figured out the linkage is wearing down (or doing whatever linkage does that isnt good)So they shimmed it and are ready to have it back in the car by tonight or tomorrow. So ONE: is the linkage thing a big problem? and TWO: is shimming a good or bad thing? It sounds like they are getting sick of working on it and decided to jimmy-rig it. Any info on this issue that will help me feel better about the car is welcome.

I havent paid anything yet. The tranny was rebuilt right before I bought the car. Ive had it for 5 weeks and its been in the shop for 10 days for the tranny. The warranty was voidas soon as I bought it....sooo I'm tricking them into doing it for free or for a little labor. I have no plates on

vwink182,
ok. good. now. the linkage, seeminly innocent, can lead to meltdown. mine, for example, is starting to loosen up or jangle around. i can hear metal parts vibrating jangly-like sometimes. like it is junk. and sometimes, not all times, but sometimes it is awkward to go into first, as if you have to clank or slam it in there, sometimes grinding the syncros. that is bad.
so for you and i both, let us fix the linkage soon.
update me on your progress. seems like you have it turning around in your favor.

Well at least you can get around with it even if it sounds like junk. Right now all I care about is getting my car back! But it would be nice to have peace of mind about the tranny.
i am not a mechanic at all...I wish I could just work on it myself. I'll let you know what happens when I find out for sure what the deal is. And yeah, it seems like I might have a car tomorrow. Always good news

Glad to read that you are about to have your car back. I know that is a good feeling. BTW, stay with the manual tranny. The fun factor far outweighs anyting the auto can do for you. I am just luckly that I have the best of both worlds. Nonetheless, congrats!

Thanks man, if only I really were about to get my damn car back. So the new story is that they got the shimmed linkage tranny in and it got stuck in 5th when they road tested it. So ****, they now say that I need a new (or quality used klinkage altogether...I guess the jimmy-rigged shimmed linkage was crap as I suspected. So I'm just about ready to take a shotgun to something, whether it be my car or the russians working on it. (ok so they are russians, white trash Im guessing)
SO, Can anyone quote me what a fair price is for either new or quality low milage linkage? I really need some imput for this cause I dont know what to expect and I dont wanna be screwed. Can my summer get crappier, please?
I'm going for a bike ride..
Oh and I was kidding about switching to auto...NEVER!

How's your linkage situation coming? The Russians working on my car found used linkage piece from a used tranny, supposed to be in great shape. It will get here monday, I'll let you know what happens...

the linkage is holding up. i have not yet made time to get it serviced by my next door mechanic guru guy. he works for cheap and i drive my S14 when the maxima is laid up. anyway, the guy is armenian! he speaks english, armenian, and russian. the people who rebuilt my tranny about 2 years ago were armenian. and the guys who installed my exhaust system and CAI were armenian.
in order for repair are: linkage, power steering (leaks like crazy), a pulley (the center one), check strange rattling noise from driver's side wheel.
i will let you know.

Well, it is DONE! I just drove home from the shop. The good news: IT shifted great and had full power. The Great news: only cost me 300 smackers...200 of which was labor. I am very very very relieved/happy.
I guess they got the right linkage from a shop in Minn. for only 75 bucks and has a one year warranty. The labor is lifetime warranty
The Mechanic said that you can rebuild the linkage. I didn't know that. maybe you can do it yourself Bonz? If you have any questions on the rebuilt or linkage I can try to answer them.

Good to have you back on the road!
What did we all learn from here? Russians cannot build cars! Have you ever seen the things that they drive in the "motherland?"
Sorry, bad ethnic joke.
On the serious side though, like bonz side, in some areas, it is best to get new and save the headaches. Even though my rebuilt tranny from AAMCO is holding up, I really, really wish that I would have opted to pay the additional $800.00 or so and got a new one--with new radiator--from the dealer. Used door hinges and such: yes. Used tranny, linkage, cams, etc: no.
Hey, that was my last $0.02. Now I am broke till payday.

well i guess we'll see DAR
you are right i'm sure but I am so poor its not close to being funny. Plus its from a low milage tranny(40k or less) and has a 1 year warranty. i hope it works out fine.
LoL about the russians

the thing is, most often, me included, our money situations will override our idealogies: if the cash isn't there, then we will do whatever we can in the moments we need to act the most. so just trust your rebuilder. there ain't no sin in that, even he is russian! at least they got sputnik up in the air before we did!
has anyone played midnight club II on PS2?
