This is bad...right?

What is that metal showing? How is that boot broken? Is this a bellow boot? Pinion...somethin like that?

How serious is this...? What can it cause?

Yes, that is your bellow boot. It covers the steering gears in your steering rack. If you catch it early enough, you have a new boot installed. It is something that you can do yourself, but you will have to remove the driver side wheel, shroud, and outer tie rod.

If you wait too long, then your gears will get dirt and grime in them that will then require you to replace the unit (not fun and not cheap).
