Umm Last time I checked, gear oil should never be in with the starter right?

Hey guys,
I just pulled the starter off my car, and a bunch of gear oil came out aswell, and it was inside/around the pinion gear aswell.

Past experiences plus a general knowledge tell me that the starter, much less the bell housing should not have any fluids dripping out of it.

I'm assuming that its leaking threw the input shaft (I believe. I'm still kinda new to all the names, lol). Also the it did have somewhat of a milky color to it, just a hint, a small swirl here and there, then again it could have just been some coolant. Its a toss up.

Thanks guys.

nope, there shouldn't be any gear oil in the starter in a manual tranny car. sounds like your input shaft seal is dead. they are pretty cheap at www.drivetrain.com

is it gear oil or engine oil? big difference on the parts. gear oil requires a complete tranny rebuild, as the tranny input shaft seal is inside the case.. you gotta pull it open to get to the seal.

rear main seal is easier.. just pull the tranny and flywheel off and you'll get to the seal.

Its gear oil, I should have mentioned the distinctive smell before

I have another tranny thats being put in anyway, but it is going to be messier than anticipated now.

little super clean or lacquer thinner and a rag will fix it right up. pull the clutch and make sure it's nice and clean. organic friction surfaces HATE oil and grease... make sure all the metal surfaces are as clean as ou cna get them, and do the best you can with the clutch disc surface.

I hear WD-40 is great on cleaning up those dirty pieces of metal on your car.

Ok Matt I'll try that and see how it works. Depending on the condition of the clutch, I may just buy a new one instead.

what do you think about the starter? Would the gear oil have any effects on the life of the starter? Then again this is a Maxima, not the Durango or Jimmy, its easier than heck to change them.
