Question regarding Shocks/Struts

I have a '97 GLE and it's bothered me for the past like 3 years that the ride is really soft/bouncy and there's a LOT of body roll when I turn...I can even feel it switching lanes on the highway. Any other maxima owners that have these symptoms?
Anyway, I was looking into buying some new shocks/struts and I was wondering if anybody with the KYB upgrades could describe how their ride feels after they replaced the factory struts? Because I want the ride to be nice and firm, but not too firm. And lastly, if I replace my struts with the KYB's is it recommended to replace the springs too? I'm trying to improve my ride without spending more than I have to. Thanks for any help in advance

If you want to keep stock springs, get KYB GR-2s or Tokico Blues. More info: http://drewm.dyndns.org/~drew/maxfaq...MaximaHandling

haha...i'll keep that in mind...ok i just read my post and i think i should rephrase my question. I want my car to ride a decent better (decent amount stiffer and smoother rather than bouncing like crazy, but not stiff as hell) For this effect, should I get spring AND shocks, just shocks or what?

I actually just got the KYB struts and shocks combo done tonight. My car feels ALOT better on the highway and local cruising. It isn't too stiff and feels extremely stable at high speeds. (just took it over 120 no prob!) My car was very rough going over bumps and crappy roads before I had them put on. I would recommend you buy springs as well for a nice handling package.

sounds good...did you get the AGX or GR-2's? and what springs did you pair them with. I know springs help the handling but does it also help the ride? Cos' i'm not a speed racer or anything, just want a comfy ride

I'm going to get Progress springs on saturday[08.09.2003]. How long do you think I can go before I need to replace my struts? The guy told me I can go for about a year, but does that sound correct? BTW: can't wait to get my 19" rims!!!! I iwll upload pics when i get them.

You should be replacing only your front struts and rear shocks. You will most likely need new dust covers all around as well. The product you want for the ride you describe are KYB GR2's. They are a non adjustable performance unit that bolts right in. They ride nice and firm yet smooth and greatly reduce body roll for better handling.

The GR2's are a nice upgrade from factory, Tokico Blues will give you back the factory ride.

If you'd like to go with adjustables, KYB AGX or Tokico Illuminas.
I have a set of front AGX's for sale http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?threadid=238363
If your interested in those, all you'd need are the rears and you'd have an adjustable ride. AGX's will make your car ride like a sports car coupled with the stock springs.

Just so i'm clear on something, Struts are the same as Shocks am I right?
Your offer sounds pretty good NJMax, but i'm leaning towards the GR-2's like you suggested, think some springs on top of that would help that much more? And NJMax, if I did end up with the GR-2's I might come to your place to get 'em, $100 for install right?

Yes springs on top of that would help more but your ride quality would decrease if you change springs. If you keep the stock springs, couple them with GR2's or AGX. Either way will give you a really nice firm sports car like ride. My offer for the AGX's installed for 250, plus your purchace of a set of rear AGX's will keep your total cost with installation around 400 bucks! You can't beat that for an adjustable suspension installed!!!!

I'm going to have to consult the bank...so, I get those rears, +150, Dust Boots +70, $470 is still not a bad price...think there's any chance that teh front dampeners will **** up a lot earlier than the rears? 30k miles is a pretty long haul...but if it was at stock height it shouldn't have made TOO much difference

I believe you, obviously you must deal with a lot of cars so that shows something right there. What's the cheapest price you know for the rear's and 4 Dust Boots? I just want to have a good estimate to base this on

Plus, once you get them installed by Tom, you know where he works...

Order the boots from Tirerack (part# SB103 & SB108 - you gotta call them). Mine came out to ~$57 shipped, and arrived in 2 days.
