I was reading a post yesterday and someone used the word detonation and it had something to do with the engine.....
I think. Can anyone tell me what that means and what exactly it refers to?

 

I think it means self-destruct.

I never read that DETONATION thread. I just saw it on the list. I'm pretty sure thats what it means though. I'm not sure if that's what the guy meant in the post though.

 

yeah, i wouldve also assumed that Detonation meant, "being blow up".

I really hope it doesn't blow up... but if you detonate too long your car will not work. Are you curious on what detonation means? Use my sig...

No special treatment for us. We sit and wait until the DB is free just like everyone else.

 

Detonation is another word for knocking or pinging caused by combustion occuring too early in the cylinders. If you use low octane fuel, it will combust before it should and throw off engine timing.

 

The actualy pinging or knocking sound comes from the explosion, which comes too early, forces the piston down while the cam shaft (I know it's not the cam shaft, the thing that the piston rods connect to... I know the french word for it) forces it up. Kinda like the immoveable object / unstopable force thing... in either case it's NOT GOOD. If you hear it, something is wrong, get it fixed. Otherwise you WILL end up with a broken piston arm, a perforated piston or a perforated cylinder wall.
