Buy Rebuilt or Used Tranny. Which is better?

I've been poking around for a rebuilt transmission for my 97 Max and I noticed something odd. Used transmissions sell higher than a rebuilt one. Why?

Seems to me that it would be better to purchase a rebuilt tranny becuz of the warranties that come with them.

Which is better?

By the way, I have a 5-speed w/ nonlocking differential.

There is a guy in Omaha, NE. that can hook you up plus a great warranty. Can't remember the name right now, but go to car-part.com and look up the part you need they will always be the cheapest.

Is that for a rebuilt or used tranny?

C'mon people, I could use some help here. Which is the better route to go, rebuilt or used?

1. used, if it comes off a low mlg car
2. rebuilt, if you can be sure of the quality of the job

Are you speaking about the possibility that the tranny might need a gear or two replaced? Or are you talking about having a shop put in a new clutch plate, throwout bearing, pressure plate, and resurfacing the flywheel?
If you are speaking of the latter, then it is in my opinion that you should have a reputable shop do the work with a parts and labor warranty of at least one year with unlimited mileage.
If the tranny needs a gear replaced then you might want to look into the possibility of getting a used tranny. Or, you could buy a tranny as a "core only" and use the gears out of that. Usually the reason they are "core only" trannies is that something is broken off the casing making it usless except for the inside parts. They can be very cheap but you are taking your chances. Hope this helps a little.

I have the same problem. I have a 97 5speed. Was quoted 1600 for a completely rebuilt tranny or 2800 for a remanufactured from the dealer. Still looking. I think its VERY important to get the install done at a reputable tranny shop. Which ever decision you make.

It seems like a lot of guys here with 5 speeds seem to have the differential bearings go bad. This was the case with mine when I bought it at 80K miles (fortunately I knew it had to be rebuilt, so I got a good deal). I was in about the same position you are in. I had it rebuilt for about $900. Bearings were about $250 of this. Knowing what I know now, I'm glad I didn't get a used tranny and have the bearings go bad on it at some point.
You might want to get a new clutch while the tranny is out. If you get one from Nissan, specifically say, "I want an OEM clutch, NOT a Key Value clutch." This one I learned the hard way and have had less than smooth, chattery engagements for 35K miles. On my wish list is an OEM or possibly an Exedy stage 1 clutch and Fidanza flywheel.

I agree. I'd get a rebuilt (so long as it was done properly).

$250 for diffy bearins? Damn! Mine were $50 a piece, and my mechanic threw them in for free because of the little labor required.

I'm not too familiar with the inner workings of the tranny, but I had 6 bearings replaced. How many "differential" bearings are there? Maybe mine were for something else. The rebuild cost $250 and the rest was for a couple of other minor parts, removal, reinstallation, and tax.

2 differential bearings. I had 6 replaced as well.

2 input shaft, 2 main shaft, 2 differential (thanks again for all of your wisdom, Scruit )
