Damn Nissan, Attempted to get a diagnosis to find the cause of my poor gas milage....
I explained them the problem, and asked if there could be some kind of computerized diagnosis done to figure out the cause, or test the O2 sensor, Fuel pressure regulator... etc.. The guy said, "I dunno what to tell ya". He then suggested I use "different gas" a different brand, or go down to 87!!! What the hell is that? So I'm telling him how i get only 180 miles on a full tank and he is like, "what to do you expect, the car is 8 years old". So I ask him if ANYTHING could be done to determine a posssible cause, he thought about it for a second, then another guy is like "have you done a tune up on your car?" I told him I changed the plugs, fuel filter, air filter, O2 sensor.. then the other guy, after thinking tells me "at 73 dollars an hour I can hook it up to a computer but I don't guarantee we can find anything". I said, thank you, and left.
Then I went to regular private owned shop to talk to them. I explained to problem carefully..... They asked if the "check engine" light ever comes on, which it doesn't. If black smoke comes out the muffler, which it doesn't. Then I told them what I already did to the car.. This 1 dude over there knew some stuff but then he started arguing with another guy that my car has 2 or 3 O2 sensors? Anyways, he took it out for a drive, then he came back and tried to test something with some hand held device, he wanted to use a plug which can be found under the drivers side dash board. He couldn't find the right wire to hook it up to though.. Then they had this small hand held computer type thing, which you punch in the model, make and year of the car and punch in what you want to test and it tells you were to look for what check points.. Anyways, they didn't get anywhere, the dude that was doing all this stuff said, sorry, I don't have the right adaptors to test anything.... they didn't charge me anything but waisted over an hour and a half of my time.
I dunno what to do now, Nissan parts and service at Staten Island is a LOAD OF SH*&!!! I'm reading Chiltons manual, and it says something about running a test on the MAF sensor with a regular Voltmeter. I'm thinking the Air flow could be really ****ty and its causing the car the run rich, burning too much gas...
Do you guys know of any other things I can test or check myself with regular tools that can be associated with poor gas milage? I need to fix this problem, I can't afford to fill up every 3 days.
thanx

i have a 92se5spd, i used to get about 450-475km to a tank, city/hwy. now im getting barely over 300km to a tank, same city/hwy.
ive changed the o2, it runs a tad better, but still has its moments where it feels like it has no power. and the fuel consumption is still no better.
ive done a diagnostics on mine thru an ex nissan mechanic, he has all the tools and computers for nissans, and everything showed up good. My fuel mixture was good, according to the nissan Consult.
Ive got new plugs, cleaned the K&N, changed over the exhaust, new high flow cat, no res, straight thru muffler, all 2.25". Changed both ball joints, did alignment, and still i get the same mileage.
I bought a PCV valve, and thermostat and fuel filter. Havent installed those yet. A couple Nissan mechanics tell me even though the temp gauge shows the temp in the same spot all the time, in the middle, the temp may still be a little off a couple degrees, and with these cars, theyre very picky , the car will try to warm itself up , making it run rich. So im gonna try the new thermostat, its oem.
The PCV valve, well, its been two years, and i should change it anyways. Cant find the PCV , where is it anyways, I know its behing the engine, on the valve cover, near the firewall, but I cant locate the one that is the same size as the one I have ready to install.
The fuel filter, it was changed last september, i figure for the cost of the filter, it doesnt hurt to change it either.
Next will be my tires, im gonna take the 16 rims with 215 55 16's on them, and put the oem rims and tires (205 60 15)
The charcoal canistor is okay, i tested it, its all good..
There are only a couple things left, the EGR, MAF, and temp switch, once i figure out where it is!
oh yeah, im gonna check my alternator belt too, its making a noise, maybe the belt is slipping just enough to cause not enough voltage to be generated at the higher rpm levels, maybe causing the sparks to be less at the plugs, making the car not burn up all the fuel in the chambers, thus burning rich.
Who knows, thats just a wild guess.
This thing is really pissing me off, Goddam computer driven cars. If it keeps this up, Im gonna put it up for sale.
