Should I expect much more?

Third time at the track so far. 14th 1/4 mile run ever... I line up with the most gorgeous Audi S4 I have ever seen And after talking to the driver (he's 15?!?!?!) I come to hear that he has had some impressive perf mods done to it too. I was surely going to get my a$$ handed to me as I have seen him drive before and he actually is not that bad.

Anyway, I FINALLY got a clean launch... no wheel spin/hop and no bogging down. I slipped the clutch at 3/4 throttle and kept the RPMs at about 3300 until the car caught up to the motor. From then on I punched it to the floor (& sprayed) and beat the crap out of my poor old car. Since he is AWD, I had almost a full car length to make up. To my utter amazement I reeled him in! My speed was 3.81 MPH faster than his at the 1/8th mark. I think I held 3rd too long though (about 6450) and only gained 18.38 MPH after that. But in the end I got the yellow slip by only .011

here are the numbers from the "gold" slip:

S4 95Max
60 Ft 1.977 2.203
330 Ft 5.934 6.038
Mid MPH 75.00 78.81
660 Ft 9.154 9.202
990 Ft 11.809 11.847
MPH 96.57 97.19
1320 Ft 14.214 14.225

Some other points of interest relating to my car:
50 shot rice juice
Ran as a "One seater" during race
50 minute cool down before run
17" with 225-45 at 28PSI (street tires)
burn 1qt every 500 Miles
6-7gals in tank

So with these things in mind, should I expect more out of this car? I would love to post dyno numbers with the above info but I have not gotten around to getting one yet. (and the guy charges $100 for 3 runs with the wideband )

If I get some slicks on my old 15s and nail the launch/shift points, ect. do you think I could get a chance to "knock on the door" of the 13s?

Sorry this was sooo long and thanks in advance for any and all advice.

D

well, a 2.2 60' time aint too bad on street tires, but there is always time to be gained in traction... give it a shot. even if you just threw on your 15s with some good street tires, im sure you would see a little time right there

Nice 60'. Yep, that's how you've gotta do it. Give it some revs and slip it out right in the sweet spot. With slicks you should be able to get 2.0 or better 60' times and that would put you down in the 13's.

With slicks you could be running 13.7s or 6s without a problem. You can spray out of the hole and probably count on 1.8 60' times consistently being as you have the tq advantage of spray. I low 1.9s and occasional 1.8s (best 1.83) with slicks that are too tall and a car that is underpowered compared to yours.

BTW a modded S4 with a 15 year old driver running 96mph traps? Something's fishy there.m Was it an auto maybe?

Really? If I stand a chance to get just a 13.9, I'm going to get some slicks ASAP. 3-4 tenths (or more ( ))off of my 60' would definitely make a huge difference. Oh I can't wait!

Yeah, that was a bad run even for him (lucky for me). His next run was 13.8 @ 100mph. It's a manual. He just needs more practice... as do I.

Thanks!

How can one without a LSD warm up slicks. Wont only one wheel spin and will only warm up that tire?

LSD would definitely help you, but it's not a requirement. Go through the waterbox to get them wet so that you can easily get them both spinning when you do your burnout to get them heated up and sticky. You avoid the waterbox on street tires.

From my experience, I do not have LSD and they both spin. Having a 5spd probably helps too though. For me, the trick is to abruptly apply a good amount of torque to the wheels (pretty much dump the clutch).

I've heard that burnouts on street tires do not help, but I've tried both ways and I have had better luck if I do a quick spin first... I did one before I got a 2.2 Probably in my head though.

BTW: Anyone want to throw in some suggestions for what size/make of slicks to get? I know nothing in this area.

Thanks.

how does a 15yr old even get to drive, let alone a car like that, and drive it quite well?

Up here in the "backwoods" people can drive (legally) at the ripe old age of 14. Just need to take a state approved drivers course.

Guys, I wish I had a pic of this kid to post. You wouldn't believe it. Just looking at him I was thinking there's no way he's even 15. But the fact that they let him run on the track is enough proof for me. His dad needed to physically be there to co-sign the waiver for him too. He's about 5' 2" tall and couldn't weigh more than 90Lbs.

I think it's his dad's car that they both put mods on. Dad seems to either have too much money or just really likes putting his son in some of the best wheels possible. Who knows.

I also lined up with him on his very first 1/4 mile run. I have a video of it and he slammed the gears about as quick as me without missing a single one. I was impressed and humbled at the same time. I guess he does a LOT of driving on MN back roads. But none the less, the whole situation is very weird.

You will get both tires spinning without LSD. LSD especially our VLSD is not designed for drag racing and you won't see much if any improvement with it in the 1/4 mile.
