Anyone ever get their rims polished or do it themselves?

I'm curious to see how it turned out.
Chrome's just too shiny for me, but I've been looking at used rims (most of which have scratches, etc).
I was thinking instead of getting then repainted, I could get them polished. Then I thought, maybe it's something that I could do myself.
The only example of aftermarket polished rims that I could find easily were the Eagle Alloy ones and some Mustang Cobra knockoffs. Very shiny, but not up there with chrome. The pictures of the Eagles are almost too much, but the Cobra knockoffs look great.
Anyone have any idea how hard it is to strip the coat/paint and what to use to do the polishing? I could just send them off to be polished, but if I did that, I might as well get them painted a custom color (a nice glossy gunmetal for example)
any help appreciated
