new brakes smoking, is it normal

just put on new performance brakes and rotors and I broke them in doing ten 60 to 5 mph runs starting slow then getting more aggressive. WHen I let them cool down the two front brakes were smoking. is that normal? DId I ride them too hard when breaking them in?
