I have a 98 gle with the infamous hard shifting from 1 to 2. Has anyone solved this problem? Has it turned into anything worse for people? Please respond i just don't want my new precious maxima to die. Thanks

my '96 GXE auto only shifts hard when the engine's cold (i.e. the first couple minutes of driving of the day, no matter how warm it is out).

it gets much smoother after a few minutes... yours shifts hard 24/7? how many miles on your car?

trans

Well it does shift hard when its cold. It gets better as it warms up, but it still seems like an awkward shift. When I accelerate slowly it kinda jerks, but when i step on it there is no problem at all. No check engine lights come on so i'm almost positive its not slipping. Oh yeah i have 79000 miles.

Didn't realize the CEL goes on when auto slips. Good to know if true!

I doubt it...mine only started shifting hard when cold AFTER I had the fluid flushed when I bought the car with 77K on it...98K now. I also have an odd 3-4 shift under light throttle and a mechanic friend suggested Lucas Transmission fluid additive...the parts store guy said it was good stuff too. Hopefully I'll get around to putting that in next weekend...I'll post if there's any noticeable difference.

you wont throw a code for slipping, at least i didnt when i was. invest in a tranny cooler, they are only like 60$ and not hard to install your self if you have a screw diver and some pliers. this should help to prolong the life of your tranny.

are you a rather agressive driver? your computer should be adjusting somewhat to the way you drive. mine would shift harder from 1-2 after i drove the car for about 6months becuase i usually give a fair amount of throttle off the line.

good luck
