SC with auto tranny?

I can't remember who it is that is running a modified auto tranny. All I remember is that the tranny is built better than the Level 10 stuff.

I mean internals on the tranny. Clutches, bels and the famous weled pin that Level 10 does.

Maxximum tuning makes one.

I had one built for my needs here in Toronto by a local shop.

New clutches/band, welded some pins/gaskets, had most steel components hardened.

Also I popped in a protorque high stall TC.

Man you should of thrown a LSD in their if you had all that work done even a cheap one like a phantom grip for less than 400 dollars. How high can you stall with the torque converter and how much was the converter?

According to my Canadian Maxima brochure for 1998 the only model that has the viscous limited-slip front differential is the SE. There's no option for the GXE nor the GLE.

The factory LSD's are crap and Nissan ones often break, I have a lot of bad stuff from 240 owners. The phantom grip at least does 50/ 50 bias.

I got an offer from Level 10 for a group deal of the Nissan kit. I think I will just check with local transmission shops for similar upgrades such as the ones listed here, Level 10 offers no warranty, that is kind of a risk for 400-$500 knowing that some members have blown them more than once.

What do I need to ask the shops down here to get a strong auto tranny built for me?
And what do you think it should cost?

I am a realtor and it is hard as hell to drive while talking on the cell phone, writing down notes, looking a map, reading the ifo on the next house I am looking at and drinking my drink...
Besides my wife does not know how to drive a stick.

Try and find a small local shop that builds trannys for extreme hp application. Ask them what they think will be best for your car, tell them what you are after.

A full build should cost somewhere between 2k-5k.

It's gonna depend on what your really after. How far you wanna go and such if you wanna reduce the power loss etc.

As a note to what was said above about autos being for girls. Well. I have the max as an auto, and the m5 which of course is a 6 speed. The 6 speed with all the tq is fun, but if they had a good auto like the max does I'd take, it'd be even faster.

I agree. Especially with lots of boost the cars spools up really fast that a auto would change gears much faster.

if your goin to spend 2-5k on a rebuild just go 5spd. i spent about 2800 on mine.
i was auto with jeff;s VB and supercharged.
tranny had like 76k
chipped away 3rd gear 4months.
then it went bye bye.
being 5spd now is a bish sometimes ex traffic, parking HILLS!, but the power and the gains is amazing!!!!!!!!!

Did you say max auto and good in the same sentence? eesh. Max auto's with high horsepower are reknowned for their problems.

As for the above two comments.

5 or 6 speed is up to you, but if you wanted that why didn't you get that in the first place? If you bought the auto you must have wanted that, I promise the auto will out shift and out accelerate the 5 speed or 6 speed, you can also go to the extreme of reducing the power loss, meaning instead of losing 21 percent of power, depending how good the guy is you can get that to about 10 percent, far less than even a manual.
Like I said mines done up, and it's as fast as the M5.

If you want to read all about it, check my webpage:

My maxima

And as for saying good and auto in the same sentence yeah I said it, but not about the factory tranny, factorry tranny sucks, but it don't have too.

Finding a 5 speed max in good condition can be difficult. Finding an LSD can be even harder. It's not impossible, but at the time of purchase I really didn't have the mod bug as well. I wasn't thinking "gee I wonder how fast I can make this thing go."

Dumping 3-5 grand in a transmission is one way to make it faster, but I'm pretty sure dumping 3-5 grand in an engine with a 5speed tranny & upgraded clutch would be just as fast if not faster. This statement would hold true up to a certain point of course, since as you almost pointed out, all real dragstrip cars are automatic.

Now my transmission is slightly modified, but currently, I *hate* it. Bogs down in 2nd because of the horsepower in first, and then doesn't peak boost in 3rd in the quarter. The result? Really ****ty times My mechanic pal that helped me install the SC advised heavily about turbocharging the car, due to the fact you can raise the HP with a dial to some degree. Dial-a-horsepower on a dyno with a stock (almost) auto transmission = kaboooom!

well depending on how all out you go on that auto tranny. but nothing tops 5speed.
u control your power given into each gear. auto will shift twice as fast, but wont last on the long run.
why waste your money re-building over n over again. hey @ least with 5speed u can replace whatever gears you toast.

but with a 2 year warrantied tranny under boost you cant beat that!!! In an auto you can replace whatever gears u toast also its no different. Alot of places just dont know how to truly build an auto. My auto will last longer than your 5 spd guaranteed!!!

My stock auto seems to work fine. It will pulll a 1.75 60' (haven't seen a 5 or 6 speed do that yet) and it can run low 12's even with the stock convertor. It will even do a 1.8 60' with a 35 shot.

How did you drive your car with the SC? Were you launching and racing often?

I am hopping that my auto will last a while with the 3.33 pulley on the V1 SC.

Right now all that I will have done is a Hayden 404 transmission cooler and Mobil 1 ATF.

I think that most of the transmission problems come from a hard launch. If I do race my car it will definatly be from a over 30 roll, and will not be often.

When I do get a chance I will get the auto built, or will probably just hunt down a 5 speed 4th gen with low miles to transfer all the parts to.

I am looking into doing a built auto. (thanks to Max'n out & redmax) That has less loss of power to the wheels than doing the 5 speed conv.

Max'n out: thanks for telling me about your guy. Looks like thats is what I will be doing in the next month or 2. Your guy is awsume. (I can't spell)
