My 03 auto SE knocking/pinging... on a day like today...please help

Yesterday was a beautiful cool dry day in PA and my max was knocking & pinging like crazy. It was K/P under load at low rpm's, under 3000. I use 93 octane, and have an Injen intake I read the coil thread but mine is an 03. Anyone have any ideas. THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Hey, I have the same set up as you, and my Max started pinging earlier this week too. I'm not sure why, but it seems to be ok now.
But, I noticed yest that it was lightly pinging in the afternoon...never does it in the morn...

Mine was in the afternoon also, strange. Are you a part of the DC Maxima club?

No, this is the first I've ever heard of the DC Maxima club.

Yeah, for some reason, my Max seems to run worse in the afternoon.
Like, a lot more sluggish and more apt to pinging.
I used to attribute it to the warm weather, but since its cooler now, I'm not so sure. But in the morning and at night, it runs great.

Btw, I was driving up I15 on thurs night...and it was pouring!!
Right around gettysburg. Of course my stock potenzas wouldn't let me do anything over 40...lol.

THAT was a rain storm, if you get up here often I'm sure you know that there are a few nice stretches on I15 to open up the max... and with that Injen growling its pure pleasure.

No Chevron in my area, I'm begining to suspect that the fuel being sold as 93 octane isn't really 93 because it doesn't happen all the time. I'm on the raod a good bit and go through a tank a week. I almost always get gas at the same station. He!! I don't know.

Hmmm, link doesn't work.
Yeah, I83 is nice too...very smooth. Just usually more traffic on I83 than I15.

I've used Chevron, and I think the Max likes it. But the Chevron station is like 15 miles or so away,so I dont always get a chance to go fill up there.

You'll know your car is pinging when you hear a faint or low rattling sound when u press the gas, usually low rpms...robs power...

Check out this thread...it will give you some info on what causes pinging.
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....hlight=pinging

As for what fixes it, if we knew, I guess we wouldn't be pinging...
I'm going to try some Sunoco 94 octane and see how that does...hate to pay for 94 octane though. I do think that Chevron is a little better for the Max. My Max seems to run a little better with Chevron.

Even though the manual and people say that pinging is normal...doesn't mean you have to like it...
I hate when my Max pings!!

I just noticed last week when I had my Powertech put on that I have some pinging too. I noticed after the 1-2 shift during light throttle and then as I rolled on the throttle I could hear it ping slightly. The only other mod I have is a stock location K&N filter. I always run 91 oct and have never heard this on my car before last week. I am thinking that the people with cai & exh are running a little lean and need a little more fuel pressure/volume to compensate for the increased air flow/decreased backpressure. If we hear audible pinging you know the computer is pulling out timing advance and we aren't making as much power as we could be. Just some thoughts.

I have a 2000 Maxima SE and it pings on hot days (virtually everyday here in Houston)especially in the afternoon. Same scenario, pinging at around 2000-2500 RPM in 2nd and 3rd gear. I replaced all six engine coils a few days back. The engine runs smoother at idle and when I'm cruising down the freeway, but annoying ping and knocks still occur with city driving. I use 93 octane with every fill up. Also, my plugs were replaced about 10k miles ago, so that's not the issue. I'll try Chevron gas with the next fill up and see if that helps any. Any one else have any ideas? I been to the dealer twice to address this problem. Still no solution.

I use Texaco 93 octane and I have never witnessed or heard any pinging.
