i think after 3 generations of loyalty to Nissan, i am switching to
Bavarian Motor Works. i am sick of the crappy service, the paint chips, how the 2k's were robbed of the extra HP, and the darn brake problem. i might change my mind if you guys provide some serious counseling

i would say it depends on which bmw you are looking at. if its a 318, 325, 328 or 525 then i would just stay with it. bmw may have better service but be prepared to fork out some cash for that higher quality. my stepfather used to have a 740iL and i cant imaging paying what he did for maintenance.

i think hes referring to the jump in horsepower from the 4th gens but the power was voided by the extra weight of the car. the vq 3.0 de-k only lasted two years before they increase the displacement to 3.5 and essentially kept the same weight as the 2k-2k1.

I went from a Max to a Bimmer and as of August this year back to a Max. I like both (pros & cons either way) and rest assured I will go to an M-series at some point in the future. Then back to a Nissan then...well...you get the idea. Bimmers are sweet, no question but I might toss a Boxter in there somewhere just for the h*** of it.

840 or 850? i think the new 545i starts at 59k and im sure the dealer will bulk that up since its all new. id look for a slightly used 540i 6 spd. great handling, finish and plenty of get up and go. thats just me though.

I may be wrong, but I thought I've heard that some of the 540's had issues with the engine....some requiring a new one?? Don't get me wrong....when I win the lottery, I may the the 1st in line to buy me a 5 series. I love those cars. Recently saw a "Road Test" on Speed channel where Tommy Kendall and Hans Stuck take them around in Europe. Pretty impressive! Some day maybe.....???

I've heard that those 8 series, though definitely neat and unique, are a maintenance nightmare. I don't know for sure though ;0

Anyway how can you compare a sub $30k maxima to those Bmws?!

some of the early 4.0 blocks did have problems but some of the 540i actually have 4.4 blocks. thats why for the new model they went ahead and called ita 545i. my stepdads top end of the motor was replaced twice in his 93 740i but he had no problems with his 00 740iL with the 4.4 motor.

If you are up in the air between a new and used BMW why don't you find a 2000/2001 M5. A friend of mine just got one and all I can say is NICE. It was well kept and had some Dinan mods (no void to warranty) which helped. He got the extended warranty to 100k and paid around 50k for the car with mid 20k miles.

Check this out.

If you don't want to spend the bling bling go with a 02 Max. As much as I want the M5 myself I still love my Max. More money in the pocket is always a good thing.

Just out of curiosity, I always thought BMW stood for Bavarian Motoren Werke? (sp?) I know, same thing as stated, but thought I'd heard that somewhere?

Yeah, no sh*t. Not to mention they are timing nightmares. Stay away from an 8 series. You won't be sorry. I can't believe your own brother wants to sell you it.

That's a tough decision, you have to weigh the pros and cons of getting BMW vs. Nissan. Depends on everything, reliablity, service, cost of ownership, and insurance.

Exactly what problems? I love my car and enjoy driving it every single day. Stock suspension was soft and vague but that has been fixed. Power delivery and hesitation, which was not bad to begin with, will be fixed with ECU crack. Just remember the price of upgrading your BMW will be significantly more.

Yeah, i saw that, whatever. It's still gonna end up costing you big. Nothing's free. And as fas as your options go, neither. The new five series are Ugly. Chris Bengles' blowing it. If you're gonna spend the dough, get the new six series, or a used M5, or 3....

every car has problems...I hope you aren't thinking of letting the BMW be a long term car--now that's funny (from what I have heard...they tend to have lots of problems after 60k..check out dtmpower.net)
