i'm not sure if this is a new national change or just local, but most of the shell stations in the new orleans area now sell 94 octane V-Power gas instead of 93. its only 5 cents more than what 93 was last week.. (1.57 -> 1.62)

Why do the sea level cities get higher octane than us that sit at higher altitudes? It doesn't make sense. The best I can do is 92 at BP/Amoco. Everywhere else is 91.

i never understood that, wouldnt a high altitude car need higher octane given the car could respond to it (ie the VQ engine). and here in NJ, 94 is the best we can do also, and when 93 is like 9 cents cheaper than 94 you feel so bad getting the only 1 higher octane for that much more money if youre cheap like me.

Someday the east coast will become poluted like the west and drop their octane down a bit. Then the midwest & central US will be the only ones left with 92-94.

No. The reverse actually. As your altitude increases, air pressure decreases, which reduces the power and combustion pressures in the engine, which reduces the chances of detonation and therefore your octane requirements also.

Octane in Europe is rated via the "RON" method which gives a higher number than the North American "(R+M)/2" method (also called PON). 99 RON is about equivalent to 94 octane in the US which makes it no different.

But in europe it's not counted in octane. Like everything else they have their own scale for gas too...

It is counted in octane in Europe. RESEARCH octane.

Another way to count is by the "motor octane" method which gives a lower number.

Research Octane Number = RON (Europe, higher number)
Motor Octane Number = MON (nowhere, lower number)

Pump Octane Number = PON (North America, average of RON and MON)

94 PON (US) = 99 RON (Euro) = 90 MON (nowhere)

wope - you are the man ! i will check the shell stations around here. im about 145 miles north of you.

hey wope you going to midnight madness as no problem this saturday, gut your car and fill up with 94 ! lol

on a more serious note i may ask you for directions to this place. i have put cheveron 93 in my max for years , never changing.

About a week and a half ago. I experienced what sounded to me like some mild pinging. Since I swear by chevron it was hard to try another gas for a while. i went with exxon 93 for a week and everything went back to normal.

out of habit i get chevron 93 2 days ago , i hate to say it but the car is slightly pinging.

you guys have seen me post enough to know im no mechanic, but i dont want anything to be wrong with the chariot ya know. so im a bit worried.

the only thing i can think its the chevron gas as of late or what about this. About a month ago i put in 87 i was lost out in no mans land and had to put it in the car. would the fuel have burnt up already, or could some still be in the tank once in a while causing the pinging? i have no idea

now yesterday ( still with the chevron gas) i installed the technosquare ecu, and it seemed like the pinging was a bit more noticable for a while.

so today im going in for an oil change, and im going to ask for some of that octane booster. is this a good move ? i have put some in the car off and on since it was new.

sorry about all that, dont want to post ***** but i said all that to say this. a good tank of 94 might also be good for the max at this point.

wope how about finding the address for me and I can look the place up on mapquest.

also im fixing to stop by the shells we have and check them out online too.

shell 94 !!!

very good info. . . never knew that. . . but this is all unleaded right??? It doesn't matter if it's leaded or not???

Also, how much of a difference could you get between 93 and 94??? I'm sure you can't feel anything in your power. . . why pay the extra $0.45 in jersey?

Ceasar-

Find some race gas (preferably 100 octane) for race night and mix it with your 93. Try to get about 95-96 octane in your tank if you can. Don't waste your money on octane "boosters" because they don't work. They say they raise your octane by a few points, but it's BS. If you have 8 gallons of 93 and you add a bottle of 100 octane booster, you'll have about 93.5 octane in your tank

btw caesar, the stickers on the pump may still say 93 but as long as its V-POWER (not just "premium"), it's really 94

.......but it looks so cool when you pour it in your tank at the pump.

Why is it that while watching some dipsh1t at the next pump throw down a bottle of (insert any commonly available booster here) into his Hyundai or whatever hes always wearing his 'hardazz' face. pOwERed bY 104+ bLaCK!
