transmission question

I have a 93 maxima gxe which needs a new transmission. I understand 89-94 use the same but I'm having a hard time finding one for a reasonable price for a 10 year old car. My understanding is that 90-92 stanzas(2.4L) transmissions are compatible and they are more abundant and cheaper. I have cross referenced this part number(RE4F02A) in my search. I was just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this before I make a bad purchase.
Thanks for the input.

I believe you are correct. I have a 92 Stanza as well as my Max, and when my Max transmission died, I went through the same process you did, and found that they had the same number. As far as Stanza's being more abundant, I don't know, but if you find one, it should work.

Yep, U11 & U12 Stanza's (Bluebird in other markets) used the same tranny as Max - RE4F02A - which is why Max trannies give us so much grief; Stanza engines put out 100 - 120hp whereas Max puts out 160hp & much more torque. Worth noting that some Stanza's also used RL4F02A trannies - same tranny without the ecu.
And yes, a 5sp from a U11 / U12 Stanza should bolt up to the Max - likely to use the same tranny as well (didn't get stick shift in NZ Max so can't confirm).
The good news with these auto trannies is that you can adjust the brake band - most car manuals don't give any details on this but my U11 manual does & I just adjusted my tranny a few days ago

Sorry, I was only speaking of the auto trans, which is the RE4F02A. I don't know about the 5 sp, but it's logical to assume that it would as well, like nismobaron says. The Stanza hp is actually 138, but still below the 160 of the lowly GXE VG. I agree that it seems silly to use the 4 banger trans on the V6... I think the RL version of the auto trans was used in the SE and GXE versions of the Stanza, which had limited slip diffs.... anyway, there are several parts that swap over between the 2 models, so if you scrounging for parts, the 90-92 Stanza is a possible source.

Thanks for input guys. I wasn't certain because I was oing to buy one from a used parts dealer who had both, but the maxima was $500 more and he insisted that the stanza wouldn't fit (trying to sell the more expensive one perhaps). Is there anyone here who replaced a 89-94 maxima transmission with a 90-92 stanza?

I think you might have to swap the bell housings, and maybe the shift arms.
I remember there used to be a manual that body shops and wreckers used to have that would tell what parts will interchange. I forget the name of it, but maybe someone here knows.

Maxima Transmissions:

AUTOMATIC (I found these by searching the .org, not sure of the accuracy)
RE4F04A = NON LSD
RE4F04AV = LSD

5 Speed

RSF50A = No LSD (Also used in the uber-rare 4th gen five speed)

RSF50V = LSD (What i have in my 92SE, leaves two nice stripes and we found out next weekend if it can be swapped into a 4th gen (most likely yes)

Also, yes, the Stanza and a few other older nissans used the same transmissions.

Too add a question:
Will a VG stick trans work a VE motor?

Hollander Interchange will show the differences and parts to be changed on similar transmissions.

They are pricey and not available online, you need a friend at a salvage yard with either the hollander interchange books or cd's.

That's the one, the Hollender manual.
Try checking with an automotive school, high school or community collage that offers auto repair.
They are expensive so most wreckers won't have them.
