What size tires......??

I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. Well, winter is coming on and I was thinking about getting some winter tires (Maybe some Blizzak's or ???) because I'm just not comfortable with the stock Potenzas in Michigan winter weather (and on top of that, the car doesn't have TC ) so I was hoping that a good set of winter tires would help. Anyways, I've decided that the winter tires are not gonna go on my TE wheels, was thinking more along the lines of maybe a cheap steelie wheel or something, maybe an older Max 15" or 16" wheel? Someone told me that on a car coming with standard 17" wheels, that the brake housings and things aren't always small enough that you could put a smaller wheel on. Just wanted to know if this is true with the Maxima. And if so, what would be the best bet.....15's, or 16's? Or steelies? Thanks.

I just picked mine up yesterday. I got a set of snow tires on some 16" steelies. 16" fits but I'm pretty sure 15" won't fit over the calipers. I almost got Blizzaks until the guy told me they were a soft compound for ice traction. I said, "so how long will they last me?" He says, "two seasons." What?!?! F that. I got the generic snow tires for less money and they will last at least 5 seasons. Now I am on a search for some ghetto-fablous chrome wheel covers...
