thinking about new rack and pinion

I have a 1990 SE 5sp
I need to replace my rack and pinion ....
I was wandering how much a nissan part replace w/labor would cost?
also is there a aftermarket part that is as excellent and how much...

Reason I ask is because I had the rack changed a year ago at
pep boys ( worst mistake ) they changed with new ones 3 times (yes u heard right)
1st leaked
2nd busted opened
3rd is so soft that i am afraid to drive even though the front end has been checked and is secured.....

Wrote a letter to main office about my situation in the last year with this chop, (which closed ) and they sympathise with me and are willing to pay for a new rack and a mechanic of my choice accordinaly,
( I guess that means that they will pay up what pep boys charged )

Anyway I was thinking nissan but i'm afraid they will charge me a arm and leg............

any suggestions

Thanks.......

Find a competent local shop and have them do it, the part lists for $988
at nissan. that does NOT include labor
