200,000+ Miles on Maxima?

Hey guys,

Just curious on the lifespan of the Maxima. I'm curious what the average miles the engine can push out? What's the most milage you guys have on the max? My cousin has a camry that's 13 years old with 180,000 miles without a single problem. I was wondering if it's possible for a very well cared for maxima can do that?

I got almost 155k on my 99.5...check back with me (and my sig) in March, I'll be there.

No engine problems at all (auto), and still gets up to 100+ mph nearly every day; and who says the SE-L model was just a marketing ploy?

155k? That's impressive. I have this funny feeling that the 1-4th generation maximas were built a lot better then the 5th generation. I have 25k on mine and I have enough problems with it already. You don't have any mechanical problems or sensor problems at all?!

Ummm, I have over 178,000, that was with a 100-shot of nitrous for a year, and a turbo for the past 2 months. Compression is right at TOP specs and the engine is performing flawlessly. I just hope the body of the car lasts as long as the engine lololololol.

Very very impressive. Now any 5th generation owners with at least 100k miles without any problems? lol Which generation do you guys think was the best built? Meaning will likely last the longest.

177,000 miles and the only major problems have been a few sensors...if you can call that major...

I should hit 200k within the next year.

back in 98, when I got rid of my 92, I had just over 170,000 with the original auto tranny FIRST starting to slip....

I am not sure about the 5th gen VQ30, but the VQ35's seem to be strong engines...I expect 200k plus on mine....

JCW, there is a guy on here with an 02 stock that is pushing over 60k already with no problems at all...

i guess it's all about luck and how you take care of it

i have a 2000 SE 5spd with 106k miles and it runs strong. Previous owner ran a few 14.8s at the track with just an intake.

My bad weather 89 Max has 235,000 and it runs like a champ still, still as strong as it was with 20,000 on it. I occassionally take it up to 120 still.

A question for you guys with high mileage. What kind of Engine, oil cleaners/additives you use? If you use any. Thanks.

Just the normal oil change (10W30). Nothing special. The only probs I EVER had was I had to change the water pump one time, and my fuel hose had a small leak at one point. Other than that, I used it a lot on the highway, and you would not believe how smooth it ran.

I believe the VQ enigne will last or even outlast 500k miles. I have seen a 2000 GXE with nearly 300k miles.

My '91 SE 5-speed had 315k on it when I sold it. Was still running strong. Replaced it with a 2k1 SE 5-speed. I don't think the 2k1 is going to last anywhere near as long as the '91. Just my gut feeling. There's something missing in the build quality, but I can't really figure it out.

who would buy a used car with 315K mi on it? You might even have to pay the junkyard to get rid of the car

Yep I know what you mean. I've been inside my friends 1998 GLE and the quality just somehow feels different then mine. My friend's dad has a 1989 maxima. Not a single problem.

Well, I've got 94,000 miles on my 2000. No engine problems, just the stuff everyone else talks about. The newest issue for me is the ignition coils. But the engine is still strong as hell.

Over 230K on my 92 maxima. Had it since brand new. Half NYC dirving and half highway. Car has been used and abused and still going strong. Orig. engine and trans.

Too bad I haven't been doing the "proper" maintenence on it for awhile either.

My son has my old '96 Max, ready to turn 174,000. He puts about 2500miles/month. Original engine and trans, runs smooth as silk, trans shifts beautifully.

We put in 2 Oxy sensors and a knock sensor. New struts (maintenance, not repair), motor oil changes every 3,000 miles, tranny oil changes regularly. It's had a few dings and road pebbles have taken their toll on the hood paint (a bra would have solved that), but this car is still a pleasure to drive.

My '02 has only 47,000 on it - not even broken in!!!!

Not sure why anyone would want to rack up that many miles. The Maxima has a lot of annoying things start to happen in the 60k range, which cost money to fix, such as the wheel shake that is not a alignment/balance issue, and the service engine/evap thing. The way technology is today, a Hyundai Accent will go well beyond 250k miles.

My rule is 7 years--get a car that can last 7 years with the least amount of trouble. Once that is accomplished it really doesn't matter. Even at 30k/yr that's 210,000 miles. The depreciation factor makes German cars very justifiable as far as initial cost goes. my .02
