Jetta has auto w/manual option.

Max is auto with frankencar intake

jetta 1.8T are slow as s hit. You could take it down easy. My friend has 2003 GTI 1.8T and I took him down easy as s hit.

You could race him and find out.

let's see small displacement 4-cyl turbo with power-sapping autotranny(my point is that autos absolutley kill small disp. engines as far as performance) vs. modded (even lightly)3.0L/3.5L with autotranny.

I'll give it to the Max.

i've raced one in my 3.0 max, and it was an even race. i think he had a chip, yet i cant remember what he said. 3.5 max will demolish that car.

In the proposed race and in my post it is a stock auto 1.8T Jetta vs. auto 3.0 Max.

Obviously it will be closer with a chip, and even a good race with a 5-spd.

That is the Max's race to win. Remember, VW underrates their vehicles performance by a decent bit. Supposedly the stock 1.8T GTi is "only" a 7.7 sec 0-60 car, but in reality it's 6.5 - 6.6 seconds 0-60. The VR6 GTi is 6.1 0-60 in reality...

That's the 180 HP 1.8T I'm talking about. The auto tiptronic is quite a bit slower, unless they have the tranny chip, in which case it's only "slightly" slower than the 5 speed manual version (Jetta/GTi run almost the same times...similar weight).

I have a video of a slightly modded 1.8T Jetta beating up on an auto 2k2 Maxima. If I can find a link to the website I downloaded it from, I'll post it.

Don't underestimate ANY turbo car. Turbo cars with auto tranny are also better able to stay on boost than manuals and this can sometimes offset some of the performance loss from the tranny.

I once raced a fully modded 1.8T in my 2k2 6spd from a 70 roll and we were even all the way to about 120ish where HE shut it off...pu$$y

This guy had a 3-stage chip, full exhaust, flywheel, clutch, intake, name it, it was on this little car.

Hope that helps

I've witnessed a 1.8t jetta hit a 13.6 on the 1320
@ E-town earlier this fall- it was an auto w/chip,
blowoff valve, bfg's street legal drag radials

I raced A VR6 with the G35 sedan from a roll. I put about 4 cars on it and shut it off around 110.

It was a stick and some type of exhaust.

But i was suprised that i didnt but more in it. i couldnt gain any after 80.

its good to see people respecting the chipped 1.8t's. nothing worse than going into a race and expect to smash the other car when u end up getting smashed. if you find a race with one keep us posted...

I've raced one before...wasn't pretty. He had Quaife LSD, chip, diverter valve upgrade, different intercooler...

He was hitting 14.3's all night long on stock wheels and tires.

EDIT-- Forget to say that this wasn't the 180 HP version ('02+)...this was an '01...

Check any site showing dyno's and the VQ35DE is listed to have maximum torque at 4800 rpm, but from those dynos it's more like at 3,000.

I've driven my friend's new Jetta VR6 with the 6-speed manual, and while it has smooth power, on the low end of the RPM scale, it doesn't match my Alty or my buddy's Max manuals. It's very quiet, but the engine just does not have enough displacement, and the weight differential is only about 200 lbs (from memory).

my best friend has a 02 GTI. he has a business called Apex Tuning that he software chips turbo VWs with REVO.

even with only 180hp stock, his chipped GTI with intake, exhaust, and short shift kit will blow my 2k away off the line (high end is a different story, of course).

also...be aware that their are differnet types of Jettas and GTIs (20th Anniversay, Wolfsberg, etc, etc). many like the 20th Ann. edition have a much better stock set-up performance wise.

stock = no way it would toast a max.
chipped, exhaust, etc = quite possible!

I raced a 1.8T Golf... i raced it two times, 1 time i beat him and 1 time he beat me... he had a chip and blow off valve... Golf's are 10 times better than the Jetta's!

Irony: After my last post on this thread, I had to run an errand. So I took the Max out. I'm @ a stoplight behind a 1.8T Golf (street is two lanes each dir.) in the left lane and there's a 2G Teg (w/usual rice setup) in the right lane. Light turns green and the Teg moves out briskly but not hard. But the Golf in front is barely moving...& this is well after the green. So I bolt around him (lft lane - rt lane - lft lane, but not close) to go on my merry way. A few seconds later he's right up on me. I'm thinking, "yo! save it for the Civics, T". As we approach the next light, I see it begin to turn yellow and VW dude decides (like clockwork) to jump into the right lane. I figured if he wants to lick his wounds I'll oblige; light turns green and I let him get the jump before I lay it on. When I let him get about a 1/2 car length ahead, I ripped him like no one's business. And I'm just watching him the whole time: from my A Pillar, front passenger window, rear passenger window, right side view mirror then rear view mirror, until he shuts it down (given the obvious results).

Then I though about this thread and started laughing. If a 1.8T is stock, the driver needs to be more concerned about running Spec Vs not 3.5L Maximas.

Peace

Jettas and other VWs with 1.8T are dangerous only when chipped. Stock, they pose no threat to Max. VWs are becoming so popular with tuner kids because they are affordable cars. Wondering about the reliability though.

If you're both stock the max will kill it. I test drove a 1.8T jetta with the 5 speed before I bought my 2000 max (also 5 speed), and was quite underwhelmed by it. In my max when I'm in first and I floor it I can _feel_ it. In the jetta it was not even comporable. It felt like turbo lag, but apparently the 1.8ts have pretty good low end torque, so I'll scratch it up to just being a pretty slow car.

"If a 1.8T is stock, the driver needs to be more concerned about running Spec Vs not 3.5L Maximas.
" True' nuff

Nice kill...and conclusion.

I think we've strayed considerably from the original question...

Jettas are nice but too small. Plus heavy for the size, neither are they as reliable or cheap to maintain. A friend of mine paid about $300 to get his brakes changed. So overall Maximas are tha best
