You could race him and find out.
let's see small displacement 4-cyl turbo with power-sapping autotranny(my point is that autos absolutley kill small disp. engines as far as performance) vs. modded (even lightly)3.0L/3.5L with autotranny.
I'll give it to the Max.

Obviously it will be closer with a chip, and even a good race with a 5-spd.
That is the Max's race to win. Remember, VW underrates their vehicles performance by a decent bit. Supposedly the stock 1.8T GTi is "only" a 7.7 sec 0-60 car, but in reality it's 6.5 - 6.6 seconds 0-60. The VR6 GTi is 6.1 0-60 in reality...
That's the 180 HP 1.8T I'm talking about. The auto tiptronic is quite a bit slower, unless they have the tranny chip, in which case it's only "slightly" slower than the 5 speed manual version (Jetta/GTi run almost the same times...similar weight).

I have a video of a slightly modded 1.8T Jetta beating up on an auto 2k2 Maxima. If I can find a link to the website I downloaded it from, I'll post it.
Don't underestimate ANY turbo car. Turbo cars with auto tranny are also better able to stay on boost than manuals and this can sometimes offset some of the performance loss from the tranny.

I once raced a fully modded 1.8T in my 2k2 6spd from a 70 roll and we were even all the way to about 120ish where HE shut it off...pu$$y
This guy had a 3-stage chip, full exhaust, flywheel, clutch, intake, name it, it was on this little car.
Hope that helps

I've raced one before...wasn't pretty.
He had Quaife LSD, chip, diverter valve upgrade, different intercooler...He was hitting 14.3's all night long on stock wheels and tires.
EDIT-- Forget to say that this wasn't the 180 HP version ('02+)...this was an '01...

my best friend has a 02 GTI. he has a business called Apex Tuning that he software chips turbo VWs with REVO.
even with only 180hp stock, his chipped GTI with intake, exhaust, and short shift kit will blow my 2k away off the line (high end is a different story, of course).
also...be aware that their are differnet types of Jettas and GTIs (20th Anniversay, Wolfsberg, etc, etc). many like the 20th Ann. edition have a much better stock set-up performance wise.
stock = no way it would toast a max.
chipped, exhaust, etc = quite possible!

Then I though about this thread and started laughing. If a 1.8T is stock, the driver needs to be more concerned about running Spec Vs not 3.5L Maximas.
Peace
Jettas and other VWs with 1.8T are dangerous only when chipped. Stock, they pose no threat to Max. VWs are becoming so popular with tuner kids because they are affordable cars. Wondering about the reliability though.
If you're both stock the max will kill it. I test drove a 1.8T jetta with the 5 speed before I bought my 2000 max (also 5 speed), and was quite underwhelmed by it. In my max when I'm in first and I floor it I can _feel_ it. In the jetta it was not even comporable. It felt like turbo lag, but apparently the 1.8ts have pretty good low end torque, so I'll scratch it up to just being a pretty slow car.

Nice kill...and conclusion.

I think we've strayed considerably from the original question...
