i just had some questions. Yesterday i installed new front rototrs, cut rear rotors, and new pads ( Porterfield R4S). When I got to my last pad install(front right), i realized that they sent me one wrong set of pads. so, I ended up w/ new pads all around, but the front lefts. Anyways, I took it for a test drive last night for about 40miles and smoke stated to come out from the front left where I just replaced the rotor and pads. And today, I drove about 50miles of normal city driving and they still smoke.... does this supposed to happen? did I do something wrong? Thank you for any help.

P.S I accidently slit a little bit of the rear caliper-cylinder- boot, should i be concerned? what is the effect?

brake job

I did my brakes 2 weeks ago , eveything is fine (so far )
However what you speak of maybe caused by calibration (calipers) You see my 85 max had this problem when i changed just one caliper ,it was not balanced, brake pressure, fluid that sort of thing (said the mech)so i changed the other it was fine. Take off the porterfeilds until you get the other set you should be fine after that

It's normal

The Porterfield R4S will smoke and smell when new as the black protective coating starts to burn off. That's normal and should stop smoking in a few days.

However, you can still smell them whenever you abuse them much like you would with any other pad. The difference is that the R4S pads will take all the abuse you can dish out from aggressive street driving and not fade.

Any fading you begin to feel would be either the brake fluid starting to boil off or heat overload on the entire braking system. If you get to that point, which takes concentrated effort and LOTS of abuse, you'd better back off or you will destroy any or all of the these components: master cylinder, caliper seals, brake booster, or whatever other components affected.
