Resetting it will make no difference in the long run, its been proven here on dynos that it just re-corrects itself.

Resetting the ECU only clears stored error codes.

You can find that information in the service manual.

On the 1995-1999 models, you are "mostly" correct, but for the 2000+ models, this is not the case. Resetting the ECU also clears all the learned settings were detected over time. This includes, but is not limited to, the following settings:

MAF Voltages at a certain RPM
O2 Sensor readings at certain speeds
O2 Sensor readings at certain RPMs
O2 Temperature Sensor readings
Air/Fuel mixture
Idle Air Flow Volume
Intake Air Temperature readings
Spark Plug Timing (Firing vs. Mis-Firing)
VIAS Control Valve Switchover Point
Vehicle Top Speed
Gas Pedal Minimum/Maximum Values

and others....

So to say that resetting the ECU only clears SES codes is wrong.

The reason you will see a gain after resetting the ECU is because the car has 100 miles to re-learn the new settings. This has been proven several times over. After every major modification, it is recommended to reset the ECU so that the car can learn the new parameters.

Oh... and on what page of the ESM does it say that? Maybe you have an older ESM revision. I have 3 different revisions for the 2002 model year alone. Check your revision number as well. On the FWD.PDF file, look in the top right corner and get the release date, as well as the revision date. You may just have incorrect information.
