Hard shifting auto

My 2K2 auto shifts extremely hard sometimes. Hard enough for it to chirp second gear. Yes this is happens when I gas it but is it normal? I have 39k on it and its pretty much stock.

there is a shift tsb for 2k & 2k1 with problems with 1st and/or 2nd gear auto shifts...NOT sure if this applies to 2k2 or not. might be worth looking into - check the sticky.

Technical Service Bulletins.

If your dealer deems it worthy of repair, they will enter the TSB number, it'll be free, and they get paid by Nissan. These bulletins are issued by govt. for all cars.

I had the same thing on my 2001 SE (Auto). I would hear a chirp going from 2nd to 3rd. The service manager spoke to nissan and nissan said that they know what the problem is but since not many cars have shown this problem, they will not issue a recall. This will require the dealership to add 1Litre of an additive to the transmission fluid...this corrected my problem.

Sounds like you need to get this TSB done if you haven't before.

That TSB has nothing to do with the way the tranny shifts.

Macalert is right (nothing to do with shifting), but it is still something you should do.....

I know my car shifts hard if it isnt fully warmed up and I am impatient with giving it throttle. Or, if im making a long sweeping corner from a stop (turning left across an intersection) it will snap shift and chirp.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one. Have you had this TSB done? In my situation I was also experiencing the harsh shifts, basically when getting on the gas there was a slight hesitation before the tranny finally kicked down resulting in a very harsh shift. After the TSB was done the tranny shifts more smoothly. So if this TSB doesn't affect the way the tranny shifts then please explain why it no longer suffers from harsh shifts, cuz I'd really like to know just to say I learned something

From what I know the TSB doesn't change shift points. Its just a reprogram of something that robbed power. I am pretty sure that the TSB won't change the way the tranny shifts.

The TSB adjusts the fuel mappings and Knock Sensor sensitivity for the affected cars. It turns out that in the cars with the lack of power, the knock sensor had the timing all the way retarded. Also, they were running a bit too rich (esp at idle). Now, as for the tranny shifting smoother, it may be just a result of the engine itself running in a smoother manner. I know that when I was working with Nissan on this TSB, they sent a few versions. Each successive version, the engine stumbled less and revved alot smoother.

HOLD THE PHONE! you guys are arguing about DIFFERNET TSBs!

E55AMG2 and MacAlert are talking about the tsb linked to above!!!!! it is completely different than what i was referring to in my first response.

myself and MaximaDisciple are talking about the tranny slippage/hesitation tsb (#NTB00-039a) that ONLY APPLIES TO 2k and 2k1. sorry, cuzzinolaf...that must not be your problem after all - i didn't realize at first it DID NOT apply to 2k2s.

for future refernce, you find a list of all Maxima TSBs with PDF downloads here:
