5th Gen Sub Enclosure Design ***pics***
5th Gen Sub Enclosure Design ***pics***
I have posted this thread in the Audio Forum, but I thought that it may be missed by some 5th Gen owners who could be interested. On my web page I have detailed sketches, measurements and instructions on building a similiar setup to what I am installing into my 2002 SE. As some mentioned to me, they would be interested in the design, which is why I am posting this on the 5th Gen Forum as well. Hope it helps if you are looking for some design ideas for your stereo setup in your 5th Gen. My site has pics on page 3 of the enclosure and sketches, demensions, and instructions on page 4.

First off I am not trying to dis anything you have done because I like the idea. OK, thats out of the way
. I have a question... Did you build this box to the specs of the speakers or to the car? Or to both? The way a speaker sounds has a lot to do with the box. Supposed to have the right air flow/volume and other crap like that to get the best out of your speakers. I am not going to go into detail because I do not know that much about it. I am just wondering if you built the box to your speakers specs. So if someone wanted to build that same type of box for 10's or 12's maybe, that the circles for the speakers would obviously change... but the dimensions of the box will as well. To accomodate the bigger speaker. Also, different namebrand speakers reguire different specs as well, so what fits JL 8's, may not work for Rockford or Diamond... Just curious I guess for future ideas

Dennis, thanks for the input and questions. Yes, I am aware that in designing an enclosure for subs, you have to take into consideration the recommended specs given by the manufacturer of the the loud speakers. I had these 3 8's in my last car and that box was built to JL Audio specs for a ported design and it sounded very good. With the previous box demensions in mind, I built this box which overall is pretty close in demensions. Obviously, there are a few differences, but from what JL recommends, in this application for 3 8W6's running in 4 ohm mono which my amp will be bridged at powering them at a rated 350 watts + by MTX, this setup will work fine for me. Like I have said previously, for anyone who is interested in using this design for either their 10's or 12's, it ultimately comes down to your individual speaker manufacturer specs and any customization of my design to fit your application. Hope this helps to answer some of your and maybe some others' questions.
Keep 'em coming.

I can always lay down the rear seats to make it louder, but doubt that will be the case. Obviously, this design, as any other, if you choose to duplicate it, can be altered to your liking.
Well, in this case with me using JL Audio subs...they are pretty much wattage-sponges. They take alot either way, so with them facing the front/cabin of the car, I think they will work just fine for what I'm hoping to accomplish. Hope that answers your question at least somewhat.
Long weekend of installing.
I got off work Wednesday morning and began working on my install. I am about 90% completed at this point and will get the final details finished tomorrow (on my birthday..woohoo) I have installed a component set from JL Audio XR650-CSi for the front doors and the JL Audio VR600-CXi coaxials for the rears. I am not upgrading the head unit at this time, so with a four channel and a two channel amp, I've had to use two Stinger high level to RCA converters and almost 50' of Monster Cable. I have taken many pics so far and will need to get them developed and scanned prior to posting them (still hoping for my digital camera for my b-day). Currently all four door panels, all door sill pieces, all the seats and all of the trunk pieces are removed from my car, pretty much taking up the entire other side of my garage. I'm anxious to see how my 3 JL 8w6's are going to sound along with the mixure of new midrange speakers. Thanks to all those who have contributed ideas and suggestions (MDF, MDF, MDF) You guys/gals will be the first (other than myself) that will know how it turned out.
I had pretty much the same style box with 2 Infinity Kappa Perfects facing into the rear seats. The bass was really tight but nowhere near as much bass compared to when they were rear facing. I now have them rear facing again.
The measurements you posted are great btw!

Its finally done...WooHoo!!!
The install was completed on Monday and I just updated my webpage with a bunch of pics. I have one of the new JMS Products Upper Grille that I picked up on the GD thanks to studman. Please check it out and see what you think. Don't forget to sign my guest book please...it looks pretty sad with only one vistor posting in there
Any questions at all about the install, please feel free to ask away.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the compliments.
MannyNJ2k2max, sorry I hadn't answered you question yet...I'd say with the subs, the box weighs about 50-60lbs or so.
I owe a big thanks to everyone on...

are the tweets JL as well?
All these comkments about which direction the subs are firing are a moot point. It is what it is. I think he was more concerned with aesthetics than performance. I am putting a single 10" in the back left corner just enough bump, and 95% of my trunk will still be free....
Nice write-up!

SEmy2k2go,
First of all, very sweet install. I myself would have also faced the woofers into the back seat. What you will lose in SPL, you may gain in SQ. Venting the woofers into the cabin will usually result in better articulation. And if it sounds loud enough for you, then all is well!! I myself am working on an aperiodic enclosure that will fire into the back seats using 2 Soundstream EXACT10s.
I bet the 3 8s sound very smooth.
I do have a question, though. Is there a reason you decided to have all three woofers in one common area rather than dividing them up into three separate chambers?
Tony
