Grinding noise when moving from a stop...

From a stand-still in first gear, there is a brief grinding noise that occurs when I start to release the clutch and the car starts moving. Could this mean there is a problem with the clutch? It only happens in 1st gear from a stop. My right axle boot is ripped so it kind of makes a whirling noise at high speed. I'm going to have that fixed pretty soon, but when I brake at high speed, the brake pedal pulses. Could the axle be the culprit? I had the front brake pads changed recently.
