Alright so I figure I need a new starter.

I went to autozone and got quoted $138 for it. I looked at it and I see two bolts where it connects....is it just these two bolts or can I not see something else???

Also I have a leak in my clutch system. Every 2-3 days I run out of clutch fluid.
I was told it could be one of two things....either its something to do with the slave cylinder or its leaking from the rubber hoses. I think I know what the slave cylinder looks like so I am pretty sure it is not coming from there. So I figure the hoses must have deteriorated over time. Should I just take this to a mechanic to fix???...I have a feeling he will replace one hose and be like....it comes to $208 and I will be like F#$K YOU!!

 

Two bolts hold the starter to the engine. The 14mm is not too bad to remove. But the 17mm could be very tight. I needed over 150 ft-lb to remove that bolt.

 

Every 2/3 days? Wow...did you poke holes in your master cylinder or something?

I'm in the same boat though my leak is quite slow compared to that - after making sure no leakage was going on around the master cyl, I'm hopefully gonna try this weekend to take a look at the hose to the slave cyl ala www.motorvate.ca . I'm hoping taking out the intake hardware up to the throttle body & the battery will provide enough access to get in there and play around...

I'd say go with it until you have time to take a look, but if you're losing fluid that quickly...by the same token, with that much fluid loss, you should notice a sweat pretty easily where it's leaking.

 

I had a similar problem. It was leaking from where the hose that comes from the master cylinder connects to the actual clutch lines. Make sure that connection is as tight as it should be.

Also, the starter is only 2 bolts

 

Inside the car where the m/c enters the firewall. Pull back the padding and you will probably see a big leak at the m/c rod

 

whats m/c?

and i dont know what 150 ft lb is relatively....is that using air power?

 

m/c=master cylinder. I have to fill my reservoir about every 2 weeks or so. I found the leak on the hose which connects to the lower bleeder valve on the transmission.

150 ft lbs is a measurement of torque. Torque is a rotating force. Torque is measured by multiplying the force applied by the length of the rotating lever. If you use a 2 foot long breaker bar and apply 75 lbs of force, the torque will be 2 x 75 = 150 ft lbs.

 

so consensus on the starter is....

--its easy when you buy the right tools

--the right tools are prolly what $30?

--DO IT YOURSELF LUCKEE!!

You need at a minimum a set of metric socket. One bolt head for the starter is 17mm, dont know for the other one. Sliding a piece of pipe over a wrench will make it a breaker bar.

replacing the starter is a 45 minutes job (tops!)

if you take off the air intake you should have plenty of room in there.

hey guys about the clutch leak....

I think I found where its leaking from. I think its where the hose meets up with the ?slave cyl? not sure what the slave cyl looks like....

is that the thing that is kinda right in front of the starter and moves when you you pump the clutch pedal?

so if its this hose i guess i just need a new hose....

anyone else have this problem?

OK so i need to replace my starter, the one hose that goes to the slave cylinder, and put on my new midpipe.

To replace my starter I have to take off my midpipe to get to the bolts.

To replace the hose I have to take off my starter to get to the bolts.


ITS GONNA BE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

had to special order the hose...going to get it Friday....after this my car should be set mechanically...then to work on my accident.

 

the hardest part to that hose is the bleeding and removing the 12mm bolt closest to the motor. Remove anything in the way of that bolt. It will make life easier on you. Trust me

 

I did a writeup for changing the slave cylinder a few months back. It's been perfect so far...havn't had to add a drop of fluid.
