4 Questions for veterans (non-newbs like me!)

Ok, i have some questions that i would love to have answered if any of you veterans out there could help a guy like me!

1. my 97 Se auto has 110,000 miles on it right now. Is it worth to put money into it and how many miles do you think i should expect to get before i have to fork out a good 6k+ on a tranny/engine..whats an estimated cost to have my auto converted to a 5spd ... including trans and labor?

2. is there a simple way to get my backseats down or do i have to rip my whole car apart to do so. I tried looking for a way but was unsucessfull.

3. would it be wise to put all the money into modding it and replacing the trans/engine? Or just save all the money i would blow and buy a used car with around 30-60,000?

4. Best exhaust setup/performance for under/around 1k?

Just would like some opinions or answers on what some of you guys would do?

I'm no veteran, but I think I can answer your questions:

1) Yes. My first Maxima is still running strong at 225,000 miles. The engines last forever. You have nothing to worry about there. The auto tranny will not last as long. Drive it till the tranny is gone and then convert to 5-speed. Thats what I would do in your case. I beleive parts on the 5-speed swap is around $800. Expect to pay around the same or more for someone to for it for you.

2) I'm not sure what you're talking about by backseats folding down. This might be what you mean.

3)It's probably never wise to mod any car. You lose money, reliability, and time maintaining. But thats obviously beside the point for most of us since were car enthusiasts. I would dump money into a 97 with 110,000 miles. It's completely up to you

4)
Intake - $50
Budget Y-pipe - $180
Budget B-pipe - $150
Stock muffler - $0

With this setup you'll see as much gains as any other Catback Exhaust and will keep the cost down and sound down. No matter what start out with an intake/y-pipe combo. ~15 -20 WHP

There is also countless other catbacks (B-pipe and muffler) for the Maxima. Ranging from $200 to $650. Do a search to learn more. Also read the FAQ to get many questions answered.

1) I started modding my car with about 110k miles. Now at 150K and it's running strong. My 5 speed swap is costing me around $2200 just for parts. Almost everything is brand new, so you could get it cheaper if you get a donor car.

2) The back seats don't fold down.

3) I don't see a problem with modding it. A low mileage used engine goes for around $750 or less, so don't worry about it.

4) My suggestion is to go with a budget y-pipe, budget b-pipe, a decent 2.5" muffler, and a cold air intake. Should have money left over to buy a UR underdrive pulley.

It's only the beginning...

If you've got ~1000 dollars to spend on an exhaust system, i'd check out the cattman headers, with stock catback.

Well, if I were you, I would sell it. It seems that you could probably get around a good 10 grand for the car, and it appears that you are looking to spend a lot of money--so just sell and put a down payment on a new max(which already as more Hp than most of will ever need)
