Nissan needs some bad publicity
Nissan needs some bad publicity
I have been fighting Nissan for the past 6 months to change my ignition coils. I went in to the dealership and described what the car was doing. They told me it was the MAF sensor and charged $ 300 bones. I told them that I didn't want to keep spending a lot of money and changing parts for nothing. They assured me this was the problem. Tow days later the car was having the same problem, I search Maxima.org and found the TSB on the coils, took it to the dealership and said this is exactly what my car is doing and that it is still under warranty. They said the car hasn't thrown any codes so thats not the problem. Then they told me it was my K&N filter. So I put a paper filter in. Still the same problem. Then they tell me the engineers at Nissan say it has to be a Nissan paper filter. (PLEASE!) if this car is that finicky, I'm selling it. Well I did it to appease them and still the same problem. then they say the MAF is bad again and offer to change it under warranty. I played a trick on the dealership though. I took the screen out of the MAF sensor before I took it in. When I got the car back I expected to find a MAF with a screen in it, but didn't. Now the dealership is lying. The service manager got mad at me and hung up. They never would change the coils because they say they didn't have proof that's what it was. Now the car is out of warranty so I went and spent $462 on 6 new coils and replaced them in about 30 min. The car is like a new car 100% difference, more bottom end and gas mileage. Now I'm trying to get reimbursed since the car was under warranty when I stated complaining about the problem, but Nissan didn't diagnose the problem correctly. Everytime I call Nissan I get the smae excuse " Let me take your info and the supervisor will call you back" they never do. I'm thinking some bad publicity is in order. Any suggestions?

I signed the petition. I'd sign it a 100 times if I could. I told the supervisor at Nissan that I was writing a letter to consumer reports, road and track, and car and driver telling them of all the bad experiences I've had dealing with Nissan and to make sure they include that on their next report of a Nissan product. That sorry *ss supervisor wasn't phased. I don't even know why Nissan has a warranty, they never honor it. I had to fight for 3 1/2 months to get my transmission fixed when it was slipping from first to second. And If I hear that excuse " we can't seem to get it to duplicate the problem you're talking about" one more time, heads will roll

This whole problem with crappy Nissan customer service is never ever going to change no matter how many complaints people make until Nissan's corporate attitude changes and they start to care. Even JD Power & Associates ranks them near the bottom in CS so it's not like Nissan isn't aware of their little "problem". It's just a matter of them caring enough to do something about it.
In the meantime, I will vote with my wallet and not buy any "new" Nissan product. Part of the reason for buying a new car is the warranty, but if Nissan doesn't honor their warranty 90+% of the time then what the heck is the point? I will however buy deeply discounted used ones (like my 99) that are almost out of warranty anyways. Then you have some value as long as there is nothing major that goes wrong.
By that time, any problems with the car are well documented on forums like this and very cheap/easy to fix. Knock sensor - $100. Check. I have the same crappy coils on my 99. Replaced one of them myself for $55. Check. Got two more spare sitting on my shelf just in case.

Yeah, isn't that funny!
I *would* consider buying an Infiniti new because their CS and warranty service actually means something and is of value.
The only Nissans I'll buy though are bargain basement used ones that have little if any warranty left.

I looked up "Nissan" in my Japanese dictionary and to my surprise it defined Nissan as "crap".

"In the meantime, I will vote with my wallet and not buy any "new" Nissan product." Yep, that will indeed force them to care.
I bought 6 new coils ($310 from dave B) a couple weeks back for my 00. My rattling has gone away. I wouild recommend that you contact nissan directly as well.
My quip with nissan is that they charge a $90 diagnostic fee to bring your car in. I mean almost wtf is the point of a warranty if you have to blow fully $90 each time to get it checked out? Will they reimburse that money if the problem is confirmed as a warranty item...?
When I brought my car in a couple weeks back I complained of a leaky oil pressure sending unit and bad coils. I had only powertrain left. They did the oil pressure unit and they drove the car and confirmed the coils were bad and I was out $90. No way it took them a full hour to confirm the coils were bad
BTW no code was thrown, so they said simply to replace all 6. An overtly bad coil WILL throw a code, but in many cases, like mine, the coil was not quite bad enough. I've now diagnosed precisely which of the 6 original coils was causing the problem by swapping in and out with my new, but nonetheless it never threw a code and it was definitely still bad. The car was knocking _like a mother f**ker_ sometimes, and now it's good.
Your nissan dealer sucks for thinking that if there is no code then the coils are fine!

So he mentions this to me in passing and I had a similar experience a couple years ago. So here is my suggestion and this is what I did.
Here in Wisconsin the dealership gets there license from subdivision of the local DMV. There is a number for this department that you can call. Get that number and tell the dealership that you are going to call and tell them the problems that you are having. The gentleman at the DMV here is a pitbull he doesn't like it when he hears that dealerships are backing out on there in writing warranties or promises. In fact when my friend told the dealership that he was going to call he was handled promptly and had this replaced that he found after he bought the car. Including a $450 power mirror.
My suggestion is contact your local DMV and try and get the number for the Dealer licensing division. Tell the dealership that you are going to call this if they do not cooperate with what is rightfully yours. I really think this will work wonders for you because that dealership doesn't want to lose there license. And tell them that you are going to contact your local Better Business Bureau.
But I think the DMV number or just mentioning it will do wonders for you. At least it has for us.
Hope this helps.
Call NissanNA and complain. If the person on the other end of the phone blows you off, ask for their manager. Keep going up the chain, till you get someone that cares.
BTW, I went through the same things with my coils on my 2k GXE. No codes on the problem so they told me it was bad gas. I explained to them I run 93 octane. Then the excuse was winter gas. BS again. I showed them the TSB and they finally agreed to replace the coils.

I've already slept with all of the hot execs. Now I'm down to the ugly *itchy ones. Still wanna volunteer? I can get their direct extension. I can't believe I'm stuck in a city with, not one, but two crappy lying dealerships. If i can give one piece of advise in dealing with nissan I would say 1. keep ALL of your service receipts, the ones they give you when you leave and 2. get EVERYTHING in writing. Also if you notice Nissan spelled backwards is n *ss in. That's kinds the way I feel right now!

you aint the only one with problems. hear my story.
my 1st O2 sensor went bad 1 month before my extended warranty was expired. the CEL had come on and i took it to nissan dealer. they changed it free and i head back home, on my way home, the CEL came back on again! i was like HUH?WTF? i turn around and head back there and tell em that if there is any problem, they fix it RIGHT THEN and i dont got time to play games with em. so when i took it right back in, they diagnose it and go "sorry its the left hand side now". so they wanna change the 2nd o2 sensor but i tell em to change all 4 (cali spec). they start tellin me all these excuses and blah blah. i keep telling them that if 2 of em are bad right now, then the other 2 will go bad in less than a week or so. but they keep saying "we cant change it unless cel proves that its bad". so i have their idiot asses change the 2nd one too and head home. 3 days after my warranty expires( 1 month after they install new o2's), the fookin CEL comes on again and guess what! ITS THE REAR RIGHT SIDE O2 SENSOR NOW. im all flaming and angry and take to the nissan dealer and start yellin at EVERY SINGLE ONE OF EM OUT THERE. finally they decide to change the o2 sensor on "good will" (GOOD WILL MY ***). but i tell em that i wasnt going to step out there unless they changed the 4th one too. bastards didnt do it. i kept telling them taht all this was a money game and since they knew my warranty was about to expire, they purposely didnt change it so they could charge my a$$, their responce? "WE APRECIATE YOU THINKING THAT WAY". i had enough of their BS and told em that if the 4th one goes bad within 1 month or so, i will come down there and not only they have to fix it FREE but they also have to PAY FOR MY GAS/ FEW HOURS OFF WORK too and that comes out to about 40 bux. once i said that, they were like "OK SINCE UR HERE, LETS PUT THE CAR UP AND DO A FREE FULL INSPECTION TO SEE WHAT IS CAUSIN THIS TO HAPPEN". so they put the car up for 4 fookin hours and supposedly do a full inspection and come up with nothing and guarantee me that the 4th O2 sensor is working perfectly fine. and they tell me to drive my car more often and dont do 5 mile trips everday (25k on my car) and all that bs. its been over 2 months now and the CEL hasnt come back on! and im getting suspicious. im thinkin they did something to the car so the CEL wont give code for o2 sensor. the CEL light works tho ! i can see it turn on when i turn the car on.!!
Anyways, NISSAN DEALERS = buncha retarded a$$ idiots in deep denial thinkin they are fooling us when the only ones they fool is their own stupid ***!
HINT: When you step into a nissan dealer, you either start flaming at everyone and cuss to get what u want or you act nice and get your *** played like a baby. thats the best solution i have came up with till this day!
I had a post a while back
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....0&goto=newpost
where they refused to fix my brake judder. They jerked me around until the car was out of warranty, with the usual "could not reproduce"
I will never buy nor recommend a nissan or infiniti without this piece of caution.
Bottom line, service centers make their money by ripping hardworking ppl off when they bring their cars for service. Mother bisshes can't even explain half the charges on the sheet (WTF is misc chgs). Tell me different if you fukking dare. Alright, I'm off the god damn soap box.
The next time I have to go for something there, I will straight up just have to bring a GUN!

That's a great suggestion for states that have it. Unfortunately, IL is not one of them. We can't go to the Secretary of State's office (Our DMV) and ***** about a dealer. However, IL and Chicago have an Office of Consumer Affairs and we can bombard them with that. In addition, you might want to contact your Better Business Bureau and mention this (and other things) to them.
Nisasn service is strange as hell. My mother owns a '95 240SX with 35k on it. We get our cars serviced at the same dealership. They treat her like gold. No problems with the car. 1 brake job and some oil changes.
But the MAX... "we dont know why the SES light is on. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the car, but it'll cost you $80 to turn it off" FUKK THAT!
"No sir, I don"t smell any burning smell, just your air freshener" OK!
"That sound your engine mounts are making is NORMAL" Why didnt it make that sound when I first got the car? Was it NOT normal then?
Before I got my emissions inspection, they cut the SES light off in 15 minutes and said thay they just needed to upgrade my software. WHY DIDN'T THEY DO THAT IN THE 1ST ****** PLACE?
The fukked up thing is I still like nissan products. IF I buy another one, it will wear the Infinti badge.
