Just joined the HID Theft Club

Yup, just happend about 3 hours ago. Man I am so ****ing ****ed off, I was at the gym when all of a sudden I heard the announcement "Would the owner of a silver Maxima please come to the front desk." As I approached the front desk I noticed a cop there, than thats when I knew that someone had stolen my Headlights. Turns out Some guy had actually witnessed my Headlights being ripped off and called the cops(suspects were described as two hispanics in there teens), needless to say those S.O.B's got away. BTW this happend in Wayne, NJ.

where do all these HID headlights go anyways?
a very feasible guess, in other maximas.. some just go for parts as well; balasts, bulbs and whatever else can be taken and sold/traded.

sick stuff

I live in the area and thought we were far enough away from NYC to be safe. It is not worth it to own a nice car anymore.

honestly nissan just need to make better protection for the light. I don't see bimer or benz, or lexus light getting stolen, their light is 2x bettter than ours. do you know a that a 330i or tl has a lower insurance rate than us. we have to pay this piece of crap. btw did the gym have camer in the lot. I alway park in near the camer esp in mall.

The thing about thieves is they move around. We are all subject to being victimized at any given time and place. Please don't get a false sense of security.

Bro- it's widespread.

Mine were jacked out of my work parking lot in Piscataway NJ. Which is even further south then you.

It sucks so bad. My total bill is $2900 for the botdy work damange and to replace teh lights. I had to come up with a $500 deductible.

Make sure you call and complain to Nissan, casue they are not doing **** about it right now. I think the thefts will increas in teh coming weeks, up until everyone get's their buts in to do the ant theft installs. Hopefully then it will subside.

Did you ahve an alarm on your max? not the factory one, an aftermarket one?

I am wondering if alarms make a difference.

They will get stolen anywhere. To my recollection it has happened in NYC area, NJ, MA, MD, CA, FL, GA, DC and others I can't recall. Don't give yourself a false sense of security. Usually it is kids going for a quick buck and they can get some good cash for an easy nights works. I have installed an aftermarket alarm system. It will not stop them, but it will get their attention, and they might decide it is not worth the time. Plus at night, I always park in well lighted areas, as close to the front entrance of the establishment, never do valet parking and will park my front end as close to a wall if one is available. Also, submit what has happened to you to include a copy of the police report to Nissan. Also, file a complaint to NHTSA. Sooner or later, there will be enough complaints for NHTSA to demand a recall or real fix to the problem.

You already heard this, but Im sorry to hear that man. I drive a 99 Max, but can feel your pain with four breakins in 3 years.....advice for us maxima drivers....keep the Lovable car in the light and closest to the entrance of any plaza...even if it means parking closer to other cars....i rather risk a slight ding(maybe....) than have my car broken into or in your case, have the headlights stolen. Also, route 46 isnt the best place to park the hid maximas...Acura headlights as well as maxima lights are always in my local town paper being stolen. Last piece of advice, if you going to Jose Tejas on Route 46 to eat, be very cautious about taking your Max, there are 3-4 stolen headlights a week between the max and acuras....

Actually these guys had to have been pros, both of my fenders have some small nicks other than that they did a good job of taking them. I'll try to get in some pics, if I can borrow my sisters digital camera.

It goes without saying, if the black market demand dried up today the hid theft would stop. One would think owners of affected cars would not seek out discounted replacements from sources other than the manufacturer, but it seems the thought process doesn't reach that far.

I'm forever amazed as I read here almost every time a set of hids is stolen that the victim comes here asking if anyone know where they can get replacement on the cheap. How do they suppose the cheap is made possible?

Once while living in NYC I knew of someone who had their bumper stolen only to have someone not even in the car business offer to sell him a replacement bumper. The car was an odd color but the bumper being offered matched to a tee. Wonder where that came from.

yeah let me clarify, I was referring to widespread in the tri state area (NY/NJ/CT)

It will only be a matter of time before thefts start to occur in other areas. And you can blame that on Nissans unwillingness to allow all Maximas to participate in the anti theft kit, cause right now it is only reserved for those states and MA.

Yeah it really sucks. I have been told not to drive to malls, movie theatres, my local gym and other large parkign areas.

I ask myself what good is a car if you cannot drive it??

Sounds like you got off easy with only a few pry marks, I had both ips of the hood bent up, and the front 1/4 panels were bent out. Sounds like pro's hit your car, which is bad news, cause now they might be back...

When I talked to Nissan last week about it, the woman on the phone said one person was hit for the 6th time. 6!!!! They are making arrangments to get him out of his lease early with no penalty. I made the mistake of buying this car... She said there was nothing she could do... I didn't know what to say to that.

I still don't blame Nissan more than I blame those who would purchase the stolen parts. Maybe we should just go ahead and blame the builders of freeways that allow cars to be driven each time there is a wreck. No demand for stolen parts would mean no desire to steal those parts.

At least the bastard thieves don't know where you live...I was followed home from the Clifton Commons (no i didnt know i was followed at the time..but came to that conclusion since it was 1am and also, i live really inside the neighborhood)

They got it from my driveway and since then, I garaged the car every single night. I didn't garage it then because I would neverhave thought that soem ***** would follow me for it--it never occured to me

Yeah well..$4496.03 later..is the present time

THat is what insurance quoted as the damage..my fenders and hood were messed up.

Nissan recalled allthe 02/03 Maximas in the NY/NJ/PA region - they put in a metal bracket to make it harder for the thieves to steal

we'll see how this holds up

Also, you can protect it as much as you like, in the end thieves will get it and there will be more damage to your car.

Man, they followed you home? Thats the worst, because you cant even trust parking your car outside anymore simply because they know where you live and all it takes one stupid night.....

The bracket comes along with the DataDots program that Nissan is implementing in the NE. I got the DataDots done, and there is no obvious difference.

Still, this is only a deterant...instead of thirty secs/HL and ~$2500 in damages, it'll be more like one minute/HL and $3000+ in damages...Anything that is done, IMHO, to prevent HID theft on the max is a false sense of security...(SOUND OFF ON THIS!?)....

Once bitten, twice shy, I try to avoid "high risk" areas, park HL facing out at malls & "busy" spots (store fronts, corners, under lamp post etc.). My HIDs where stolen in front of my father in law's house in whitestone (decent area), since then, go with your gut feeling....If ou think your HIDs will be ripped, DO NOT PARK THERE....ppl may think you're paranoid, but again OB,TS...

Best thing to do, in retrospect, get AE HLs + conversion kit....even if they are "illegal".....

BTW...guys who think this epidemic is because of OTHER Maxima owners have it all wrong. The MAJORITY of thefts are ONLY for the ballast/bulbs to retrofit, read ghetto rig, into their RICE compact or fence on eBay.

I just had the DOTS installed and according to the tech the metal bracket is secured just above the wheel well on both sides(which you can't visually see unless you put the car on a lift). As far as the DOTS..supposedly it is some kind of liquid verification that if stolen the Police could track them down. The DOTS are supposedly entered in a Nissan database and then registered with Police. Good Luck.. Let's see what happens if thieves go after our car's with the brackets and the DOTS installed and if they do steal them if the lights are tracked down?

You should've received a letter, if not I suggest you call your dealer and ask about this, if he is doing this just set up an appointment.

just go to the dealer and request them...If you are in the metro area...

Is it me or will these metal brackets resuklt in more damage being done to the car when they try to rip the lighta out?

Till these ****** realize what the "program" has done to prevent/deter the thefts, I'll just park indoors 24/7.

Mark my text, this is gonna result in MORE DAMAGE for the next months...
