Parking Brake gone!? :( How do I fix it?

Yesterday I put winter tires on the car all around and when was taking the car off the parking brake discovered that that usual tension you have in it when pulling it up is gone. Only at the very top I can feel putting tension on the brakes but from down position adn up the handle travels so freely you could blow on it and it would rise up , lol..
I do not know how bad it is and how serious, but I feel very uncomfortable. I know I should search, but cannot yet, should be able any day though now.

Guys, please Help!!!
THANKS!!!

you can adjust the brake cable. The adjuster nut is under the lever, inside the leather boot. Dont put too much torque, they are sensible to damage threads. Also did you check of the other cable ends are connected to the break assembly? Do you have drums or disc brakes at the rear?

I thought all Maxima's have 4 wheel disc??? I'll bet $10 that the nut on the cable end fell off or is too high. Just take the e-brake boot off and check, the nut should be right against the metal braket on the actual e-brake, not in the middle of the threads

I have disks, as far as I know all 4th gen had disk brakes.
Well, Now it's really strange. The tension is back on. I did not do a thing. I came to the gas station and as I always do put the car on parking brake and the tension is back on. I still will check to see if anything is loose.

Thanks guys!

You could have had condensation in a cable that frooze. During the day ice melt away. I had - still have - this problem on the first really cold night a couple of weeks ago.

Does anyone how to regrease or remove water or condensation out of a brake cable?
