Can SC'ed Maximas handle loooong trips?

I happened to have read that thread in the General Maxima Discussion forum about who would drive the longest to a big meet.

If I was ever to drive down to the U.S. from Canada and attend a big Maxima meet I was wondering how my SC would hold up. I especially recall when Cheston ran into pulley problems on a long trip.

Now with our SC-equipped cars I was curious to find out who has driven the longest or furthest in one trip and with or without the stock pullies?

On my V2, I drove almost 800 miles to Miami for a show and 800 miles back. Both ways, I was driving hard, a lot of full throttle runs, 130+ stretches. It was a long flat, straight highway and kind of boring. 3.33 pulley, plastic idler pulleys. No melting or problems.

Yep... did a L.A. to Yosemite trip on the stock 3.6" belt... actually about 800miles r/t with mucho boosting.

I just did 2 (within 3 weeks) roundtrips to San Jose with a good amount of boosting... with the 3.12" pulley!

Belt still looks great... <knock on wood>
Unfortunately my "crickets" are getting discontent and "voicing" it...

If I remember right, Iansw did a drive from Seattle to Phoenix when he had a V1. Have no idea how many miles that is, but it's a lot. Believe he using a 3.25 pulley....Ian would be able to tell specifics. And I know Maximan did a trip from Bend Or. up to Seattle with a V2, 3.33 pulley and the metal idler pulleys, which is 3-400 miles or so. I hear when doing long trips, the fuel mileage is really good that at times it seems very unnatural of the car. Should be no problem for your car to do a road trip.

I drove my Turbo car from KY to DC (650miles) then week later went to Raleigh NC which is 350miles each way. Then two weeks after that went from DC to Birmingham which is 780miles each way. Not one issue. Gas mileage was in the 25-26range. Plenty of sprinted runs.

I know Im not S/C but boost is boost when you start taking long runs. You do gotta deal with the issues that come along with it. Lets put it this way, always cary a good 100+ piece toolkit/box. You know you can get them for $20-25 at Sams/Walmart/Costco and plenty of other places. Its your best friend in times when someone stupid happens and you dont have say a simple 10mm socket to tighten somthing like a blown off charged pipe.

Ive used the toolbox now over 5times on local trip issues and one trip that was 200miles.

Seattle to Phoenix and back - 1400mi each way (2800 mi trip through Cali) plus alot of driving when I was there. - 3/25" Pulley and a bad SC with a compressor air leak.

I blew a CV Joint, but the belt and SC held up just fine....Raced a Turboed Civic through Grants Pass with ALOT of boosting and alot of uphill runs. No problems whatsoever. It was actually not a riced out Civic and the guy sort of kept up pretty well....(kept baiting him then blowing by him)

MaxiMan drove from Oregon to Seattle and back, and only jumped a rib on the Dyno when he got here.

one item of interest is to keep the stock belt in the car as a bcakup and put it on before you do your long trip bypassing the blower...and just put it back on later if you wish...or just keep it in case something does go wrong with the SC belt....as sometimes happens...

That is a lot of driving for one day...

I drove from Snellville, GA to Miramar, CA in 1995 with my S/C'ed Dodge Ram 4x4 pickup...

Needless to say, I did not get good gas mileage. I did not run into any problems, though...

In 2001 I drove the Max with the V1 and a 3.125. from New Orleans to upstate New York, 1400 miles . On the way up I had my wife and 1yr old son, stopped off in VA at a friends house for a 12 hourr nap. About 1/2 way through Mississippi very late at night my excelerator pedal dropped to the floor and didnt work. I was in cruise control and it was still working. I just kept going till I needed gas, then coasted into a station. This trip was after the motor swap debocle. It turns out the the nuts on the throttle cable bracket had come loose, I guess i had them hand tight. I just tightened thm down and all was good .

On the way back I drove straight through 1400 miles in 18hrs, no prob.

I think this really comes down to how good your install is. Get AAA, bring a spare belt and money to get it swapped or tools to do it. Better safe than sorry.

Many year ago I did MTL to Toronto in 3:45hrs ( about 650KM ), There was no turbo in the car but one in my Bott, he he he... It was like in the old movie Point Limit Zero. I would never do that again, I'm too old for that stuff now, I prefer to cruize now on.

Cheers

You should be alright man as long as you have a spare belt with you just in case. Of course, the tools to change it are beneficial to

I drove 6 hours to Seattle and 6 hours back. As Ian said, i did do a dyno while up there and the belt popped but that was most likely to do with the fact that I was a dyno dummy at that time and did something stupid.

Anywho..I drive 3 hour there/3 hour back trips ALL THE TIME in any given day and havn't had a single issue. The V's are great products.

I'm running 3.33" pulley and metal idler pulleys.

I think I may have to do a run down to Seattle in the spring time to do the same. The place I contacted about tuning doesn't care to have my business.

So how long did it take to tune your car?

If you are going to do a dyno tune...you would be much better off coming another 3 hrs down to Portland and doing it at Ground Zero. Ian has stated there's not really any good shops in Seattle that give a hoot about what your doing. Ground Zero in Portland is the BOMB DIGGITY and Maximase86 can back me up on that one. Took 3.5 hours to install FMU/dynotune. Seriously, consider it as your talking about $400 to do a good dyno tune and the better the shop the better the results.

All he needs is a Dyno and O2 Readout. I can tune the Cartech no problem. It's a simple device that I've been using for 2 years.

that wasn't exactly what I wanted to hear
nor was I looking to drive that far for a dyno tune, Max1man...

Thanks for the info though....I'll have to see what else is available in
my neck of the woods!

Nono BlackCat - it would cost no more than $75.00 to do it down here.

MaxiMan had no experience with tuning and needed someone to show him how - which this guy apparently did a great job of. He also had a hesitation problem that the guy helped him out with.

You don't need that sort of attention, because I am very familiar with the Cartech FMU and your car isn't having the problems his was.

Come down here - you'll be fine.
