When the auto tranny torque converter is operating is "viscous slush" mode at lower RPMs, what is the mechanical efficiency loss percentage as compared to "full lock-up" mode at higher RPMs...

Aside from spending the money and reprogramming the transmission computer and tuning the valve bodies, is it possible to take the manual tranny 2nd, 3rd, and 5th gears and put those in an auto tranny as 2nd, 3rd, and Overdrive gears? Doing that with the gears would make each successive higher gear about 50% taller than the previous gear -- I think better for perforamce --- and the overall gearing of the upper 3 gears would be about 15% shorter for each...

Kinda the best of both worlds -- better gearing for performance plus auto shifing convenience --

Insane enough???

There is no way it can work.....

By looking in my FSM there are no physical gears persay as the 5spd tranny has. Instead its a group of clutches (drive/driven plates), bands. The only real gear is the final gear, idler gear. If you want a quicker auto buy a torque convertor, VB mod and some 205/50-15's tires (same gearing effect as a 4.0 final gear). Those mods should have you beating all but the best driven 5spds with simular mods.

No. They are completely dissimilar. It wouldn't do you any good even if you could perform this kind of "organ transplant". The automatic cars are only slightly slower than 5-speeds. The performance difference is because automatic cars
- are slightly heavier
- have slippage in the torque converter
- have a different final drive ratio

Perhaps the FSM does not show this clearly, but automatic transmissions do have physical gears. They are planetary gearsets. For more information, go to http://www.howstuffworks.com/automat...tm?printable=1

Re: Planetary gearsets

your right I just misworded what I meant . What I meant to say was that the auto's gears are totally different physically than the 5spds. Now if there was only a way to source some stronger than oem clutch assemblies for the auto.
