Fixed Bent Rim, now Car shakes ALOT above 50 mph

hey guys..havent posted in a while...a week ago i got a flat and tried to change, but with the freezing temps we've had up here in the NE, while trying to take off the lugnuts on the wheel, i snapped one off with the bolt tryin to press down on the wrench with my body weight...so eventually i got everything off really slowly and took it to a tire shop and my rim was bent slightly and that was the cause of air leaking

So they fix the rim and everything, weld it back to shape and say the tire is fine...however after a week or so of driving, everytime im on the highway, the car shakes like crazzzyyy anytime over 50mph, unimaginable shaking...the most around 70ish..and i dont mean a lil vibration...i mean the car feels like its gonna fall apart

so now im concerned, is this normal after trying to fix a bent rim?? is it the rim? is it that im missing one of the lugnuts?? my strut tops are actually blown too in the front but thats been like that for a few months, so it wouldnt be that cuz that didnt happen before...so wut can possibly be causing all the shaking? thanx for the help

yea , there are special places to send the rim to in order to do that. I wouldnt trust a shop with that.

I've had a simmilar problem with a bent rim as a cause of an accident, the simplest way to check if the car is shacking as a cause of the rim is to switch the front wheels with the back.

how much of a difference will it make switching the bent rim to back (it was the front passenger side)?

makes all the difference if the shaking is a cause of the bent rim since maxima is a front wheel drive.

Anyway, same thing happened to me and my mechanic fixed the problem by switching the front wheels with the back ones. It may not be the best sollution but it sure worked.

Just try it, it'll take u no more than an hour to switch the front rims with the back ones.

PS. not just one front rim but put both front rims to the back as for the even tire wear.

I have a bent rim the back and it still shakes I don't see how you think if you move it back it wont shake anymore? Certain tire shops can fix bent rims with a porta-power or hydraulic press with a half moon tool. Theres a shop around here that charges 20$-30$ to fix a bent rim. I suggest you find a shop to bend it back to shape. Switching rims won't work.

just because the rim is fixed doesnt meant the car is fine. your alignment could be totally out of whack and such.

Whoa those lugnuts are waaaaaaaaaay too over torqued, you should not have to put your whole body weight into the wrench when you get it off, same thing applies to when you put it on. You might already know this but I figured I'd add my 2 cents. I used to do the same and then I started using a torque wrench, it's amazing how little torque you need to hit 80 lbs.

i would say that your shop did a ****ty job. i had this done when i bent a rim to the point where the tire bead wouldnt even stay on it and now it doesn't shake at all. it did cost me $70 tho whoever got it done for $20-$30 got a great deal

There are a lot of things to consider here.
1. If u are missing a lug, ur tire wont seat properly. (replacing a lug is easy/cheap enough)
2. Did they balance the tire after fixing the rim? If the tire balances out u shouldnt feel anything. If it wont balance out its still bent/out-of-round.
3. Whats ur tire pressure on all 4 tires, make sure its the same I usually set mine at 32-33PSI
4. U will feel less shake if u put it on the rear, but that may not correct the problem.

I caught a curb doin some donuts in the snow and the tire blew so they went to balance the new tire and couldnt because the rim was bent although in its circular pattern it didnt look out of shape it was wobblin side to side on its hub and anything over 50 gave me crazy vibrations so i changed that sucker out fast.
