Cali Emission? Fed emission??

i brought my car used and i thought it was 98.

Since i was thinking to get y-pipe so i did some research and everywhere i go its saying that 9x~99.5 is fed emission.

but after i tried this hmm its saying "V"

"Raise your hood. Look for a shiny metal identification tag fastened to the passenger side of firewall. The top row is the Vehicle Identification Number, starting with J. The second row is model information. The first five characters are BLHUL. The 12th character is the destination:

N = Canada
V = California
U = US, not California"

hmmm is mine really cali or fed??

Are there 2 or 4 plugs on the front of the engine? 2=Fed, 4=Cali.

If you see 4 plugs on your car then you have cali spec.

You don't need a cali spec y pipe. Just ignore the people who tell you to count plugs. They're just poor souls who are confused. When you just tell somebody to count to see if they have 4 plugs in front of the engine, they may or may not count the two that are on the radiator, and if they do, be tricked into thinking that they have a california spec. Silvia, you have a 98, right? And you're sure of that? The V means that yes, you do have a california spec car. But since you have a 98, the y pipe for that is exactly the same as a federal spec. The california pipe sold is for the 99 californias, which have an extra o2 sensor, and can only have 1 precat removed. So order the federal spec.

You shouldn't need one according to what they just said. Check the plate on the firewall like in the first post.

I don't know where you got your info but cali spec maximas need a different y-pipe. Show me the thread where you got the information that a cali can use fed y-pipes. I am 99% sure that you are wrong.

It's an old thread, and I can't search. But I'll show you a pic from courtesy Nissan to show what I mean. http://www.courtesyparts.com/Merchan...nsor_95-98.gif
You can also verify this with any of the y pipe manufacturers.
It's only the 99 california spec that needs a california y pipe. 95, 96, 97, 98 all use the same pipe. That's how your plug counting method works. Only the 99 californa spec maximas have 4 plugs (Not counting the two on the radiator) in front of the spark plug cover, and it is only they who need the california spec y pipe. Try to find a single 95-98 owner who has 4 plugs. (Again, do not count the two on the radiator). There ARE 95-98 california spec cars. I have one of them. Bought in california, and has the california v designation.They have the v as the 12th character on the firewall plate, but they do not require a california spec y pipe. They also only have two plugs in front of the 3000 V6 words.

And hey, don't worry Silvia. If you told them that you have a 98 california spec car, they'll send you the right pipe. I told budget that I had a 95 california spec, and they sent me the fed spec pipe.
