Cutting Shifter

I cut my shifter for a slightly shorter throw but its not short enough. The first time i hacked off the threads and put a new shift know on. This time i wanna go even lower but using a hacksaw while the shifter is still on the car is next to impossible. I don't even want to bother taking the shifter out. I need advice on the best way to cut the shifter while its stil in the car. thanks

I used a hack saw. Just put it in gear, and hold the bottom with vice grips. Yeah it sux, but I can't think of an easier way.

I dont know how good of an outcome or how short you can get your shifter without taking it out. Im pretty sure its not that hard to do, you can do it with some simple hand tools. If you dont feel like doing that take the boot off, grind down the little lips that hold it up (make a new one with duct tape or something lower) and use a sawz all or cutting wheel if you have them to cut the shaft shorter.
Im going to do mine tonight and ill let you konw how it goes. What i plan on doing is taking it out cutting a section out and reconecting the two parts with a collar. I have an aftermarket shifter but id lke touse the stock leather one more.

If you have one or know someone who does, use a dremel tool. I used mine when I cut my shifter (STS). Just make sure you have the heavy duty cutting discs. You will go thru the regular ones fast! But the heavy duty ones last longer. Put down some towels or rags around the shifter though since metal shavings and sparks are created by the dremel.

I am going to try to use a pipe cutting for cutting the shifter. You know the tool that looks like a C-Clamp that you spin and it cuts plumbing pipe. I think that this will work great! I will let you guys know!

I got an aftermarket ****, and it was adapters for different size sticks and then 3 screws that go horizontally in to hold it on. It doesn't need threads, and fits on pretty much and size stick. I just got it off ebay.

I didn't have to drill any holes, the screws just pinch it against the stick. But if yours isn't one that does that, it might work to drill screws.

Cutting your stock shifter WON'T give you shorter throws.

Well it would look a lot better than the long A$$ shifter we have on it now. When I have the dough, i'll buy myself a real STS. But that won't be for awhile.

Remove the shift ***.

pull down the boot

take a large plastic bag and push the shift rod throught it creating a place for the shavings to fall.

cut off the rod to desired length (2" in my case)

grind down the nubs that held the boot up

Use a couple layers of electrical tape around the rod to created new "nubs" to hold the boot up.

Install aftermarket shift ***

pull boot back up over electrical tape

**this does not really create shorter throws between shifts....but it does make it so you hand does not travel as far, it looks better, and still hifts like stock."

Well, update the pipe cutter didn't cut it totally off since the wheel wasn't big enough. It did however start a groove for the hacksaw. I like the shorter shifter a lot better than stock and it isn't any notchier. I cut about two inches off and then grinded down the nubs for the boot. I30Mike great idea about the electrical tape holding the boot up! It was really starting to annoy me.

It most certainly does reduce the throw, or what *I* mean by "throw". Not by as much as a short-shifter, but it will reduce the DISTANCE the shift **** must move when changing from gear to gear.

Perhaps the issue is what exactly one means by "throw". Without a rigorous definition of this term, this argument will continue to go in circles.

So you brought back a 9 month old thread just for that? I already cut mine and there is a bit of a difference.

Search finds old threads just as easily as it finds new ones, and misleading statements are still misleading, regardless of how long they have been allowed to stand unchallenged.

heres some pictures for ya...

i love it. When people get in my car and see it there dont even know what it is. Good luck. Id suggest using a pipe cutter. If you cant get ahold of 1 of those use a dremel. The hacksaw method sucks *****. After you hack it make sure you get it flat on the top bc if u dont the **** will sit funny.

Good Luck

Why would the **** "sit funny" if the top is not cut flat? With the appropriate insert, there shouldn't be any way it could do that. But then, I have never installed an after-market shift ****, so perhaps there is something I don't understand.

It seems to me that how much can be cut off is dependent on the following factors:
  • OE or aftermarket shift ****
  • OE or aftermarket shift boot
  • Stock shifter or short shifter
With an all original set-up, I'm guessing that only about 1" can be cut. The reason is that there is a bend in the shifter 4.5" below the top. The little "nipples" that the top of the shift boot rests on are only 1" above this bend, meaning the shift boot can only be 1" lower or it will sit cockeyed.

Shorter ***** or aftermarket leather shift boots will allow more to be cut off.

Any chance the one in the 98 had been hacked or had a short-shifter installed? Otherwise I would not expect there to be any difference. My 98 shifter was certainly tall.

OK, so since I have an automatic how would I go about to doing this. Would my only thing be to put the plastic bag over, cut/dremel and then solder the top piece back on? Does anybody have any pics with an Auto cut down with a Levoc?

Also, how much to cut on an auto, I know it can't be as much as a Manual?
